III | When The Blood Moon Rises

The sky was especially lucent --- the Blood Moon shining above them as they all gathered around on the wide castle grounds. Just as promised, Jin arranged an extravagant party to celebrate the rising of the Blood Moon which only occurred once in every fifty years, and had also arranged for the King and his brother's mating ritual. This time, he had outdone himself, as if he was preparing for the grand finale before his last bow.

The lavish fete had been in a full swing for hours now.

The other vampire lords, their mates, and companions from various vampire clans across the lands who were gathered tonight were raising their goblets and making toasts of prosperity and congratulations to the King and his new mate Hoseok.

What an insult to the King Consort and true mate --- but Jin's heart could not break again even if he wanted to.

There was nothing left to shatter anymore.

Every jagged piece of his heart all crumbled into fine dust.

The Vampire King's rose had all but withered and died.

His brother Hoseok could not even look him in the eye all through the night.

Hidden by the huge drapes decorating the pergolas, he quietly left the venue when he thought no one was looking and went to the other part of the castle grounds where the garden was.

His mind was blank; his heart was numb; his body was weak.

From the night he learned of his pregnancy, Jin had been avoiding drinking blood as much as he could to cut off the fetus's nourishment, allowing the unborn to die slowly inside of him. Jin silently cried when he was alone during the past few days --- mourning already for his child he could not nurture and be born into this world. And in all those days, Taehyung never sensed his unborn heir inside of Jin, so he guessed their child's heartbeat was likely getting weaker and weaker.

Upon reaching the castle's conservatory, Jin leisurely walked around the place, admiring the blooming moon roses clambering freely everywhere. The fragrance of the buds was overwhelming him, particularly tonight when the moon was at its greatest. He caressed a fully bloomed one, holding it delicately as if it was something so beloved and precious --- before he crushed the rose in his palm into pulp.

"My apologies, Your Grace. I never thought you'd be here," an unfamiliar voice spoke from behind him.

Jin immediately turned around, eyes dark as he saw a mere stranger standing at the conservatory's entrance. He was wearing a black dress robes just like the other male vampire guests. He frowned. He seemed so out of it these days he did not even sense someone was nearby. He snapped, "I did not know you would also be here, which is actually a huge mistake since this part of the castle is off-limits to everyone except for the King and I, or the gardeners who maintain this place."
