high school, first day of junior year
Seol could barely wake up at 6:30, when her alarm rang. She didn't even know how summer passed by so quickly. All that she knew is she definitely wished vacation could last forever.
The whole morning she dragged her feet around, moving like a ghost. After she quickly ate a sandwhich, Seo put on her uniform, a navy colored skirt, a white blouse, a navy vest and matching navy bow for the colar. She put on her blue knee socks, a pair of comfy platform sneakers, then grabbed her backpack and headed out the door, ready to catch the bus.
A couple of streets away, a high schooler who had just moved in a new home woke up in the same mood. Haechan was too deep in his sleep to hear the alarm and ended up running late on his first day at a new school. He had enough time to at least make himself a bagel sandwhich and throw it in the backpack to eat later. He didn't even get the new school's uniform yet, so he had to just go with his old one for now.
As Seola got in the bus, she noticed a guy with flufly light brown hair, wearing the uniform of a school in the other side of the town. He got off at the same stop as her and headed towards her school. "New student? He's not too bad-looking." she thought.
Seo entered the school's hallways and started searching for her friend, Eunju, since they decided to meet up before heading to class. Haechan didn't even know where exactly the class was, yet that bagel was his first priority. He felt alienated here, he didn't know anyone and by junior year everyone had set group of friends, yet that little snack brought him a small distraction from the worries. As he was going for the first bite, Seola tripped over his backpack that was at his feet, clinging to Haechan for stability, making the bagel fall on the ground.
Seola's eyes widened, "So sorry, I can buy you something els-" she hesitantly said.
Haechan scoffed "If you watched where you're going this wouldn't have happened."
"If you didn't put your backpack on the floor this wouldn't have happened. If you act like this I'm not gonna give you anything." Seo rolled her eyes. If he was going to act like a douchebag she's going to give him the same response. She left Haechan alone and walked to class, while he continued whining about the destruction of his beloved meal and how his entire day was ruined because of it.
"EUNJU!" Seola excitedly exclaimed and waved after seeing her closest friend who was in the same class as her since freshman year.
Eunju turned around and smiled softly, giving her friend a a long hug.
"I can't believe we're juniors now!" Seol exclaimed. The girl chuckled in response.
Seo sat in her usual seat, the 3rd bench from the door. However, her seatmate had moved somewhere else so she sat alone.
"I definitely saw the same number of students in class, written on the board by the door as last year. Do we have a new classmate?" Seo asked.
Her friend that sat in the bench in front just shrugged with a smirk on her face. "I hope he's cute"
"I just hope he's not annoying since he'll probably sit next to me." she sighted, remembering the bagel guy and telling Eun all about the annoying encounter.
"I can't possibly be that unlucky to have him as my classmate, right?" she asked.
"I hope so."
After a few more minutes of giggling and gossiping with her friend, the class started and the teacher walked in. Behind her, unsurprisingly, was the new student. When they walked in Seo and Eun's dropped their conversation, but upon seeing the guy their faces had two completely diffrent expressions. Eun smiled, the guy definitely being more attractive than she thought he'd be. Seo looked like she got hit in the head with a brick.
"Girl, you ok?" Eunju asked. "Wait... is he?"
Seola just nodded slowly and sighted "This will be a very long, exhausting year" she thought.
Haechan was too out of it to notice her face at first but when he did he let out an accidental scoff and he rolled his eyes a little. "Great. All to hell with being friendly with everyone." he thought.
"Hello everyone! Happy to see you all again. We have a new student, Lee Haechan." the teacher said, turning to the boy who waved his hand with no enthusiasm. While a few girls giggled at the presence of a new boy, some others weren't too welcoming.
"You can sit next to Jung Seola! She's one of our top students and a lovely, lovely girl." the teacher said smiling, showing him the free space next to her. Although flattered with the compliments, the last thing Seola wanted to do was sit next to this Haechan boy.
"Can I change seats?" Haechan asked with a monotone voice. Noticing his teacher and classmate's confused expressions he continued explaiming "I'm not exactly a model student so sitting next to one is making me pressured."
Seola was bewildered by his response. "How two faced can one be?" she asked herself.
The teacher smiled fondly, surprised by the way he suddenly expressed his worries. However, she wasn't going to let his feelings change the seating plan.
"Maybe all you need is someone helping you with schoolwork. Please sit down in your designated seat."
Realizing he had no way out, he sighted and grumpily sat down next to his new seatmate, exchanging an annoyed look with her.
He took out all his books and pencils that were thrown in the backpack, writing with his elbow on Seo's side of the seat.
"Please use your side of the desk." Seo said, breaking the quiet tension between them.
"You're acting like there's a clear line between the sides." With that, the girl pushed his arm away with a book, using it as a shield.
After an hour filled with biology terms Haechan didn't quite care to understand, it was time for break. Seo hit Eun's arm, leading her quickly out of the class, dreading another minute with her seatmate.
"So, you're Haechan, right?" the voice in front of him asked, Eunju's seatmate.
Haechan took his eyes from the gaming console he snuck in and nodded.
"I'm Lee Mark, nice to meet you." the boy said shaking the other's hand. Mark lived in Canada until the year before, when him and his family moved to Korea. If someone in that class knew something about feeling a little left out, it was him.
"Wanna play?" Mark asked, taking his console out of the bag.
The two started talking and soon it was as if they've been friends since forever. At some point Haechan's stomach started growling and before he could saying anything his new friend was sharing his sandwhich with him.
The day went by like any other school day for Seol but Haechan had to familiarize himself with all the new classmates and teachers. Things went by a little easier since in every break Mark shared funny stories about the teachers and let him know what kind of person everyone was.
School was over and at the schools gate Seol said goodbye to Eun and they went their seperate ways. She arrived at her station only to see her deskmate already waiting for the bus.
"Can you stop following me?" Haechan scoffed in annoyence.
"As if you're worth following." she replied putting in her earbuds and opening her mp3 player.
"Can't believe I have to sit next to this annoying two-faced douchebag for the rest of the schoolyear" she mumbled under her breath.
