The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away on 12th of the Islamic month of Rabi' al-Awwal, in the year 11 Al-Hijri (which is the year 632, in the Gregorian calendar). His last words were, “Expel the Jews of the Hijaz and Najran from the Arabian Peninsula, and know that the most evil of people are those who took the graves of their Prophets as places of worship.” This was reported by Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal in his Hadith collection, the Musnad Ahmad.
The body of the Prophet ﷺ was then washed and then prepared for burial. The burial hole was dug in the floor of a corner of the small house of Aisha bint Abu Bakr, peace be upon her. This was because the Prophet ﷺ stayed at Aisha's house until his final breath, and all Prophets had to be buried where they had passed away. Then the body of the Prophet was lowered into the grave slowly. The Sahabah filled the grave with soil, and Aisha placed a curtain around the corner of the house to separate the grave from her living quarters.
Two years later, in the year 634 of the Gregorian calendar, Abu Bakr as-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, the best friend of the Prophet ﷺ and the father of Aisha, was buried in the house as well. Then, ten years later, the body of Umar ibn al-Khattab al-Farooq, may Allah be pleased with him, was buried next to Abu Bakr.

Myth: The Prophet ﷺ was buried in his mosque.Debunk: The Prophet ﷺ was buried inside Aisha's house. He would not have approved of the house of Aisha (which eventually became his grave) being fully incorporated into his mosque during the later Umayyad and Abbasid eras. This can be reflected in the final words of the Prophet ﷺ.
