SYNOPSIS!
LAYWYN DOES NOT KNOW WHO SHE IS. Left as a baby at Cippanhamm's convent, Laywyn has always felt keenly aware that she is meant for something more, something greater than the life expected for an orphan girl of bastard blood.
When the only home she has ever known is attacked by the Danes, Laywyn and her mother-figure, Hild, are saved from torture and torment by the infamous Uhtred of Bebbanburg. And it is Uhtred who recognises the qualities in Laywyn to become more than just a bastard nun — to become a shieldmaiden and forge her own destiny.
Destiny is all. Andas Laywyn's destiny becomes further entangled with Uhtred's while she matures into womanhood, fate introduces her to a fellow bastard. A Dane boy who is the illegitimate son of Uhtred's enemy, Kjartan the Cruel. Sihtric.
All Sihtric has ever wanted is a family. His mother was cruelly slaughtered in front of him by his father when he was a child, and Kjartan never spared any love for his bastard son since. Sihtric swears himself to Uhtred both to get revenge on the man who murdered his mother, and to forge a legitimate future for himself. Neither him, nor Laywyn, expect to fall in love.
