LEO AND VERONICA stood in the entry hall with Cal. They had gotten cleaned up, even their clothes looked brand new. Cal stood with them, and so did Festus, back in his normal form. Snorting fire over his scales to keep himself defrosted.

It had been about twenty awkward minutes, standing around in the icy hellscape when Khione finally brought Jason and Piper back.

As Khione led them down the stairs, Veronica noticed that Leo's eyes followed her. And judging by the wide eyed look on Jasons face, he'd realised the same thing.

As Leo started combing his hair back with his hands, Veronica let out a snort at the thought of them dating. She made a mental note to warn Leo about the snow goddess later. She was not someone to get a crush on.

At the bottom step, Khione turned to Piper. "You have fooled my father, girl. But you have not fooled me. We are not done. And you, Jason Grace, I will see you as a statue in the throne room soon enough."

"Boreas is right," Jason said. "You're a spoiled kid. See you around, ice princess."

Veronica smirked as Khione's eyes flared pure white. For once, she seemed at a loss for words. Veronica gave her a cheeky wave as she slowly danced her fingers around. Khione stormed back up the stairs—literally, and about halfway up, she turned into a blizzard and disappeared.

"Be careful," Zethes warned. "She never forgets an insult."

Cal grunted in agreement. "Bad sister."

"She's the goddess of snow," Jason said. "What's she going to do, throw snowballs at us?"

Leo looked devastated. "What happened up there? You made her mad? Is she mad at me too? Guys, that was my prom date!"

"We'll explain later," Piper promised, but when she glanced at Jason, Veronica realised it was probably because she didnt know either. Perfect. Now we have to wait for this clueless Superman to open up, even though he probably had dementia.

Jason looked away from Piper, trying not to show how unnerved he was. "Yeah," he agreed, "we'll explain later."

"Be careful, pretty girls," Zethes said, turning to Piper and Veronica. "The winds between here and Chicago are bad-tempered. Many other evil things are stirring. I am sorry you will not be staying. You would make a lovely ice statue, in which I could check my reflection."

"Uh, thanks Zethes." Piper smiled nervously.

"Yeah, thanks," Veronica said. "But I'd rather play hockey with Cal."

"Hockey?" Cal's eyes lit up.

"She's joking," Piper said. "I hope. But, the storm winds aren't our worst problem, are they?"

"Oh, no," Zethes agreed. "Something else. Something worse."

"Worse," Cal echoed.

"Yipee." Mumbled Veronica.

"Can you tell us?" Piper gave them a smile.
This time, the charm didn't work. The purple-winged Boreads shook their heads in unison. The hangar doors opened onto a freezing starry night, and Festus the dragon stomped his feet, anxious to fly.

"Ask Aeolus what is worse," Zethes said darkly. "He knows. Good luck."

He almost sounded like he cared what happened to them, even though a few minutes ago he'd been willing to turn them into ice sculptures.

Cal patted Leo on the shoulder. "Don't get destroyed," he said, which was probably the longest sentence he'd ever attempted. "Next time—hockey. Pizza."

"Come on, guys." Jason stared out at the dark. "Let's go to Chicago and try not to get destroyed."

NONE OF THEM relaxed until Quebec City faded behind them. That place was chilly.

"You were amazing," Jason told Piper, and Veronica didnt have to turn around to see the blush on her face.

Veronica rolled her eyes and tuned them out, placing her chin on Leos shoulder.

"Hey Fireboy, you've been quiet, not like you at all, I might add. What's up?"

"Just thinking. I still can't believe Khione, she looked so nice."

"Valdez, an ocean might look nice and pretty, but when you get in the water, it's polluted and cold. So dont worry, your friends will find you a better prom date."

"Well if you went with me-"

"Okay. Conversation is over. Hey guys, who wants some sandwiches?" Veronica turned her head.

Veronica passed them some sandwiches from Leos pack, and they ate them as they flew.

Nobody talked. Whatever they might find in Chicago, they all knew Boreas had only let them go because he figured they were already on a suicide mission.

The moon rose and stars turned overhead, gleaming softly through the raven sky. As Veronicas eyes started to feel heavy, she wondered if Percy was looking at the same stars, or if he was even in a place where he could see them.

Her brother had been the one person she could always, always could depend on. Her relationship with her mom was strong, sure, but her brother was her beacon, her best friend, her pearl in an ocean of clams.

Sometimes she'd envy him. How could Poseidon like only one of his kids? (Spoiler alert, it was Percy). But that had never strained their relationship with each other. Percy had held the sky for her, protected her from their evil step-dad, and took care of her when she was sick. Veronica looked up at the gleaming stars as she wished upon them. Please Tyche, let her brother return home safely.

As she replayed the memories in her head, her eyes drooped closed, and she fell against Leos back softly. He instantly tensed, as if she was Hades, but she didnt care. She fell asleep to the mechanical buzz of Festus, and the comfort of the others wrapped beside her.
