It all started on a normal school day.
“Amanda!” Alyssa cried, waving me over. “Come sit with us!” Alyssa’s less close friends snickered.
“Oh, Alyssa..” One of them sighed. “She’s literally the most useless Xearthen. Like, She’s the only one with two powers that are in the worst category, and you’re.. well. You!.”
They said all this as if I couldn’t hear them, standing a few centimeters away, holding my lunch tray.
The rankings usually don't matter to anyone, but lucky me! Since I am literally the special case, the lowest ever even heard of, I am, unfortunately, a very targetable girl.
I shook my head at Alyssa, giving her a small smile as I scanned the lunchroom to find a seat.
“You guys don’t have to be so mean.” I heard her say. I could sense the frown. Then, she appeared next to me.
“Come on, Amanda. Let’s find a seat!” Alyssa said cheerily. The ‘friends’ she left behind sighed, then whispered about how Alyssa always left them for me. Well. Their fault, the suckers. Alyssa doesn’t tolerate bullying or discrimination. It’s a surprise to me that she’s still their friend, but I guess she thinks they’ll change. She always told me that they’re nice, just not to me.
“Alyssa, it’s fine if you want to sit with them at least once. I mean, they’re not wrong.” I mumbled.
Alyssa led me to a bench, where we sat down together, eating our bolognese, and then devouring our small red velvet cakes.
After a moment, Alyssa said “I don’t care if you’re the least powerful in all of Xearth! We are BEST FRIENDS, and screw what everyone else thinks! We're staying best friends! Right?”
I nodded. I was so lucky to have a friend like Alyssa. She held out her pinky, which I shook eagerly. We did our special handshake, and repeated our little secret code phrase to each other, which was Best, Low, High, BFF’s till we die!
“What class do you have after?” I asked her.
“Maths, but forget that! It’s break now! To the library?” Alyssa asked.
I smiled, and agreed. We always went to the library, searching for answers on how to improve our powers. I had once heard a rumor that there were ways to improve the chances of a Blessour’s powers to work, or that there were ways to know if it worked.
Alyssa, on the other hand, would just read random books on how to control her powers, since she lost control when she was feeling a strong emotion. As we shuffled through the books, I found various things. For example:
A Blessour can tell when the blessing works, since they will feel abnormal inside. The only way to gain this, however, is to channel your energy into the blessing.
I have always blessed people, hoping it would work.
Sometimes it did, more often it didn’t. However, it might not have ever worked. It might have been coincidences. Closing my eyes, I thrust my energy into a small blessing for Alyssa.
“Bless her to get a hundred on her math test,” I whisper. Feeling drained, I wait. No rush of warmth.
That’s disappointing.
“What did you say?” Alyssa called, from another bookshelf, earning a glare from the librarian.
“Just testing something out!” I called back.
“Okay!”
We kept on reading, until it was time for class.
“See you later?” I said, smiling wryly.
“Yep! Wish me luck on my math test! Good luck on the English one!”
We headed to our classes. Strangely enough, in the middle of English, a warm rush passes through me. My jaw dropped, and completely forgetting I was in a test, I smiled delightedly, letting out a squeal.
“Is there something you would like to share with the class, Miss Amanda?” The English teacher snapped.
“No, miss. Sorry, miss.” I said, my cheeks heating. However, I was delighted! It worked! The book worked! Once I was out of school, I would go back to the library and kiss the book, then find the author, and give her a hug, then declare her the best person, after Alyssa. And my family. But anyways.
The English test was so difficult. I wish I could bless myself.
Once school was over,(Thank God!) I met Alyssa outside its huge gates.
“The math test was SO EASY.” She said excitedly. “Like seriously, I am amazed- What?”
Unable to contain my giddiness, I jumped around, squealing.
“It worked! I blessed you! And it worked! And I know it wasn’t a coincidence because I used a method to tell if it worked!”
Alyssa joined the hopping about, and we held hands, jumping around like bunnies. Everyone was looking at us like we were delusional, but no matter.
“Any good news on progress with your powers?” I asked her.
“No.”
“Oh.”
“Can you try to bless me with control?” Alyssa sked hopefully.
“Okay..” I centered my energy, and channeled it. “Bless Alyssa with control on her powers,” I whisper. No warmth. Based on my guess, and experience, it would only work when being used, so I urged Alyssa to use her powers. Still no warmth.
“Sorry, Alyssa,” I said glumly. “I probably should've used the previous blessing for that.”
“Oh it’s fine! At least now I won’t go and get a big fat 0!”
We laughed, as we walked the way back to our houses. We were neighbors. I still felt disappointed in myself, but nothing I could do about the past. Unfortunately.
