Sleeping is AMAZING. Have I ever mentioned that before? I feel like I should have. Sleeping is a beautiful, beautiful part of life. Whoever disturbs me sleeping? I will bless them with bad luck. For. The. Rest. Of. Their. Pathetic. Sleepless. Life. Unless it’s someone nice. Like Alyssa. Or my family.
But I will not refrain from hitting them with a hardcover book that’s on my night table.
As I did with my brother this morning. He still has a red cheek. I was and am most definitely not sorry. Unless he would have cried. Then I would’ve felt bad, but he knew what was coming, and he was prepared for the pain.
At least, half of his face was prepared, with pillows taped to it. He did not expect round two, on the other side.
Anyways. Enough talking about what I did to his face. I’ll tell you about my family.
Lucky me, of course my family members have good powers, and of course, I’m the one anomaly in my family.
My brother is a Cleanish, an Energy Giver, and has flight power! Cool, am I right? Don’t tell him I said that. He’ll literally get so ecstatic, I wouldn’t be surprised if he secretly had a Feral ability.
My mother is a Scaly (SO jealous, by the way), a Colorair 2.0, and is able to control the weather. Also awesome- Obviously.
Finally, my father. He has Electricity powers, Invulnerability, and is a Conjurer.
Anyways, after waking up, I dragged myself out of bed, and changed into the school uniform, a white collared shirt, with a navy skirt, white leggings, and, unfortunately, the navy tie. Then, I headed down for breakfast.
“Mmmm, pancakes!” I sighed blissfully. Pancakes and waffles are my weakness. Two of many weaknesses, at least. We chatted around the dining table, until I remembered I had to meet Alyssa to walk with her to school.
My eyes widened, and I scrambled to get my backpack, put on my shoes, and run out the doorway.
“Bye, Mom! Bye, Dad! Bye, Neil!” I shouted, leaving them shaking their heads, laughing quietly.
I spotted Alyssa waiting for me in front of the front yard.
“There you are! Come on, we’re going to be late! We probably need to run to class now-”
“I am not running-”
I think you can guess what happened next. I ran with Alyssa to school, and the worst part was that we had gym first period.
In the middle of P.E, an alarm blared. It was the town emergency alarm, for when someone goes missing, or something important like that.
“Everyone, lock your doors, and windows, and stay inside! This is not a drill, I repeat. This. Is. Not. A. Drill!”
Well. That’s one way to cause people to rush around the school in a huge panic, trying to find the assembly room to get locked inside, which, in my mere opinion, is a terrible idea. If the terror thing gets to you, it gets to everyone, and, so, I, trying to make someone safer, grabbed Alyssa’s hand and dragged her to the janitor’s closet. There’s a small space, enough for two people, that Alyssa discovered. It’s at the back of the closet, and well hidden. I closed the door, but didn’t lock it, since it would seem mighty suspicious if a door was locked but you didn’t see anyone inside, know what I mean?
“Are you crazy?” Alyssa hissed. “We need to get to the assembly- WE’RE GOING TO DIE BECAUSE OF Y-”
“Shush!” I hissed back. “And be quiet!”
“I have a right to freak out right now! You didn’t even lock the door!” She retorted.
“Listen! If I lock the door from inside, and they can’t open it, they KNOW someone is inside. Then, it’s not that hard to break down a door, so they’ll look around! If we keep the door open, and they come in, then boom! They look, and they leave.”
“That does not explain why we didn’t go to the assembly room, Amanda!”
“Literally everyone is there.” I point out, and a look of realization dawns on Alyssa’s face.
Suddenly, we hear sounds. Footsteps, and thumps.
We both hush each other, then shrink back, frightened.
Please, please, universe, I prayed, please let everyone be okay. The intruders start talking in hushed whispers, and whenever someone whispers, my ears strain to hear, because that’s when the interesting things are spoken.
“Why is this Chenit girl so important, again?” Someone grumbled. It took all my willpower not to gasp, and it took Alyssa’s too. Alyssa was an only child, and Chenit wasn’t a popular last name.
“She’s powerful. Very powerful. However, don’t question the boss, you idiot.”
“Right, right, right-” The other voice said tensely, and they opened the janitor’s closet door. I narrowed my eyes, trying to identify the intruders.
“Are you sure she even goes to this school?”
“Yes.”
“Well, we can’t find her, and we already checked the assembly room, so-”
“Boss ain’t gonna be happy if we come back empty-handed.”
“Ain’t our fault. He’s a good soul, he’ll understand.”
“True. Let’s do one last check and go.”
They left, and Alyssa and I glanced at each other. She looked like she was about to vomit.
I didn’t dare comfort her, in case the intruders could hear us, and so together, we waited all day in the small closet, waiting for the signal that everything was safe.
