Sua Lee hugged her son tightly as her husband's rampage finally died down and he went to bed for the night.

Donald clung onto his mother. He was terrified of his stepfather. His stepfather constantly hurt them and he was too weak to be able to fight back.

Donald listened to his mother's heartbeat. It was a sign that she was still alive and breathing. It was a sign that the only person he cared about and the only person who cared about him was still with him.

His mother's heartbeat was a gentle lullaby and slowly eased Donald into sleep. In his dreams, he recalled faint memories of a different heartbeat, one not belong to his mother but rather to his biological father.

He didn't remember his father but his mother had told him that one day he had suddenly disappeared without a trace. Those types of disappearance were one of Donald's biggest fears. He had already lost his biological father and by the way his mother spoke of him, he was much nicer than his stepfather. Donald feared that his mother may one day disappear without a trace too.

Years later, Donald did lose his mother. He would no longer be able to hear her heartbeat. Her heartbeat and his father's heartbeats were now just mere memories inside his head.
