【 an unexpected answer 】
naeun looked at the piece of paper in her hands, her heart racing. she couldn't believe that jaemin had dared to take the first step.
with cautious excitement, she punched the number into her phone and waited nervously for the call to connect. her fingers were shaking in anticipation, and she could only hope that he really had given her his number.
as she watched the call connect, she took a deep breath and tried to remain calm.
"hello?" came a voice on the other end, breaking her out of her reverie.
her eyes widened in surprise as she heard jaemin's voice. she was still in shock that he had actually given her his number, and now she was actually speaking to him.
she took another deep breath to steady herself and tried to respond with as much confidence as she could muster.
"umm... hi," she said nervously, her voice trembling slightly. "is this..." she paused to think of the words, "is this jaemin?"
"yes, it's me," he replied, his voice sounding even colder than she remembered. she flinched slightly at his tone, but tried to brush it off and continue the conversation.
"i... i'm calling because..." she hesitated, wondering how to explain why she had called him. he hadn't given her any indication that he was interested in talking to her, and now here she was calling him out of nowhere.
jaemin remained silent for a moment, and she nervously wondered if he was annoyed that she had called him. maybe this was all just a joke to him, she thought. maybe he had given her his number for some unknown reason, but he wasn't actually interested in talking to her.
her mind was racing with negative thoughts, but as she opened her mouth to speak, he finally broke the silence.
"what do you want?" jaemin asked in a flat tone, sounding colder than ever.
her heart sank as she heard his terse response. she had managed to convince herself that he had given her his number because he wanted to talk to her, but now that hope was shattered and she realized that she had miscalculated. He wasn't interested in her at all, she thought. he was probably annoyed that she had bothered to call him.
with a heavy heart, she steeled herself and tried to answer his question calmly. "i'm sorry to call you like this," she said, trying to sound as confident as possible, "but i just... i saw the number you left on your notebook."
"so you're calling just because you found my number on my notebook?" jaemin asked irritably. naeun felt her heart sink even further as she heard his tone, but she was determined not to crumble under his coldness.
"well," she began, trying to ignore the feeling of disappointment that was growing within her, "i was... i was hoping we could talk."
he stayed silent for a moment, and she couldn't help thinking that he was contemplating whether to hang up on her or not.
she swallowed nervously and began to wonder what she was even doing here. he was clearly not interested in talking to her, so why was she continuing with this pointless conversation?
but somehow, she couldn't bear to hang up just yet. despite everything, part of her still wanted to believe that he was interested in talking to her, and she had to cling onto that tiny shred of hope.
finally, after several seconds of silence, he spoke up again.
"i don't have time for casual chit chat," jaemin said, sounding even colder than before. "do you have something important you want to talk about?"
