Matt’s P.O.V.

I huffed as I placed the last box into the car. “This Texas heat man, it’s crazy.” I said under my breath. I tied my long red hair into a ponytail and headed back into the house. I looked at my toddler who was hopping down the stairs with her favorite stuffed bunny in hand. This made me smile a little at her. She had no care in the world, and it was the most adorable thing.

“Hi daddy!” She said looking up at me innocently with her large gray orbs.

“Hey Sweetheart.” I said picking her up and kissing her cheeks, making her giggle loudly. “Should we do one more run through the house?” I asked, she nodded happily pointing up the stairs. I ran through the house making sure each room was empty and nothing forgotten. She laughed as she was being tossed around in my arms. “Okay that’s it.” I told my wife Eliza as she smiled at my antics once I finally made it down the stairs. I carried Evelyn on my neck swinging her little legs outward as I pretended to dance to no music.

“Daddy you can’t dance there’s no music.” Evelyn stated.

“Well let’s get some music then.” I said as I got to the car. I opened the car door and buckled her into the car seat. I opened the door for my wife and she gave me a small smile. I hopped into the driver seat and put my bandana and shades on before turning up the radio while pulling out of the parking lot.

*Time Skip*

We are only half an hour away from Florida now and I was super ready to get our life started here. I could already start to see the clear blue waters with tan sand. “You’ve grown so much from when we were kids.” Eliza said out of nowhere interrupting my thoughts. I froze thinking about when I was a kid.

“What makes you say that?” I asked her skeptically.

“You aren’t that sad foster kid who didn’t know his parents and felt bad for himself anymore. You’ve taken charge, and now look at you. You have a better wrestling job in Florida, and we have a daughter who loves you dearly. I’m proud of how much you’ve grown.” She said rubbing my shoulder.

“You and Evelyn made me grow Liza. I have become a better man because of you both. As long as you and Evelyn are happy, I’m happy. I have learned to be content with the little things.” I said smiling as I saw my sleeping daughter through the rear-view mirror. “You’ve come a long way too you know; from the girl who had pink and yellow braces and pimples all over her fa- “

“Stop! I get it Matt, I get it.” She said smiling and covering my mouth to keep me from embarrassing her. I chuckled and shook my head. We sat in a comfortable silence for the remainder of the ride to the beautiful state of Florida.

I smiled slightly at the large blue sign that said, “Welcome to Florida.” “It really is beautiful.” Eliza said in awe as we pulled up to our new house.

“It’s definitely bigger than our last house. Evelyn will enjoy running around here.” I said, stepping out of the car. I smiled, proud I was able to do this for my wife and daughter. I snapped out of it and picked up my daughters sleeping form from the backseat. I kissed her head and grabbed her stuffed bunny before taking her into our new home. I sighed realizing I couldn’t sit her anywhere to sleep since there’s no furniture in the house. “Liza, will you hold her while I set up her bedroom upstairs?” I asked, Liz who was still looking around the house. She nodded and took Evelyn without a word. I grabbed everything for her bedroom and got to work on it.

After about an hour and a half later I had Ev’s entire bedroom set up. Everything was back like it was in the old house except for a few things I added, like the night light and a little walkie talkie if she ever needed me. She asked me to buy it so she could tell me where all the monsters were.  When you have 3-year-old with an active imagination lots of things happen. I smiled at my work on the room and headed downstairs to grab Ev. I picked her up from Eliza’s arms and gently carried her up the stairs. I laid her down in bed softly before turning the room light off, the lamp on, and then closing the door. Eliza and I quickly got to work fixing up the rest of the house. Within about 6 hours of work without a break, we got everything in its place. I laid down next to Liza on the couch and put my head in her lap.

“You want to go get something to eat?” I asked her tiredly. Once I said that a fully energized Evelyn came hopping down the stairs with her stuffed animal.

“I do! I want chicken nuggets and French fries.” She said, hopping up and down excitedly in front of me.

“We may need to talk about your chicken nugget obsession, it’s getting a little out of hand.” I said grabbing her mid hop with a grunt.

“No, it’s not, chicken nuggets are amazing!” She said and started singing about chicken nuggets. I chuckled and got up with her in my arms. “I guess we can go to the store and get some prepared stuff.” I stated dragging my body to the car. Eliza nodded and followed me to the car.

We made our shopping trip quick only getting a couple of things for each of us. By time we got back home I was too tired to eat anything and headed straight for bed. I thanked Eliza profusely for putting Evelyn to bed as it was usually my nighttime routine. I soon fell asleep not having much time to think about it.
