CHAPTER TWO
barely my friend

Miguel has quit karate. Definitely because his mom made him, but nonetheless, Miguel has quit karate.

He's been in an awful mood since, but he won't admit that to his friends.

Someone spray-painted a dick on Daniel LaRusso's billboard for LaRusso Auto, and Maeve is finding it difficult to handle the second-hand embarrassment she's feeling.

Venus has-- so far-- had two karate lessons with Daniel. Her next is after school, but for now, she's sitting with her... new friends in the library.

"So that's it?" Maeve says, "No more karate?"

"Nope," Miguel answers, "No more karate."

"It's probably for the best," Demetri shrugs.

"Shut the fuck up, Demetri." Venus says casually, not taking her eyes off her homework.

Demetri shakes his head, "Venus, it was starting to boost his confidence."

"Isn't that a good thing...?"

Eli speaks up, "Yeah. I thought it was kind of cool how you stood up to Kyler."

"Are you insane?" Demetri widens his eyes, "Let me ask you. What's the best superpower to have?"

"Super strength." Venus and Miguel say in unison.

"Wrong!" Demetri demands, "Invisibility. A distant second would be super speed to run away fast."

"Run away from who?" Kyler approaches.

"We were... just leaving." Miguel says, standing up with the others.

"Hey, where you going?" Kyler grabs the back of Eli's head, "Look at this freak. What kind of girl would kiss this shit?"

"Piss off, asshole." Maeve hisses.

"Oh, that's right, you would."

"Leave him alone, Kyler." Miguel defends.

"You haven't had enough, 'Rhea?" Kyler threatens.

"And you haven't had enough?" Maeve speaks up, pointing to the bandage on his nose, "I think you're forgetting who did that."

Kyler scoffs, "Please." Kyler hits Miguel across the head, but not hard enough to do any damage.

"What the hell, dude?" Venus furrows her eyebrows, "We didn't do shit to you."

"You know, for a Cordelia, you're nothing like your sister." Kyler chuckles, "Surprised you didn't bring the rest of the Suicide Squad when you came here, emo."

"Wearing black doesn't mean I'm gonna kill myself, dumbass," Venus narrows her eyes, "By the way, your name is Kyle, or it is Tyler. it can't be both, dude."

Maeve chuckles softly.

"Let's go, guys." Venus says, walking away and raising her middle finger at Kyler as they leave.

Kyler stands dumbfounded. What the hell?

"Okay, now, kick." Daniel says.

Venus kicks the board in front of her, but doesn't break it, although she knows she can.

"Kick... harder."

Venus sighs, "Right. Sorry."

She kicks the board again, still not breaking it.

"Okay, stop kicking," Daniel decides, "Is everything okay? I mean, our last lesson, you were doing great."

Venus runs a hand through her hair, "Yeah, I'm
just... there are these guys at my school who... who like to pick on my friends a lot. Today they were being awful and it's just pissing me off."

"I'm sorry, Venus." Daniel says, "Do your friends ever get hurt?"

"The other day... at the Halloween dance, they sort of beat the shit out of my friend." Venus shuts her eyes, "And I feel bad that I wasn't there to... I don't know, rescue him? It's probably stupid."

"It's not stupid, Venus." Daniel replies, "Wanting to protect your friends is a good thing."

Venus nods, "...Yeah. You're right."

Her phone buzzes, so she grabs it and smiles softly at the text.

Daniel chuckles, "I didn't know you had a boyfriend."

Venus' smile drops, "Boyfriend? No. What? No! He's barely my friend."

The text is from Miguel.

"Alright, you wanna try kicking this board again?" Daniel questions, softly laughing.

Venus rolls her eyes, "...Yeah."
