"Words are powerful"
That's what she told me
As I gazed into her stoic eyes
Because there are thousands of different words
Filling up the dictionary
Page after page after page
Leaving descriptions...
Examples...
Pronunciations...
Each and every single word
Nouns...adverbs...metaphors
Similes...adjectives...acronyms
Different kinds of grammar to describe those words
Commas...periods...colons
Dashes...semicolons...quotation marks
There's so many different ways you could phrase each word
The tone in which you speak it
The way you place each word in a certain matter
The energy or laziness you put into it
Leaving a positive or negative reaction for those who hear it
Different words in which each letter is shaped
Twisting or curving to your recollection
Memorizing each one engraved in your brain
And who's to say a word means what we've been taught
What if the word forward means backwards?
What if a sentence is really a paragraph?
What if yellow is actually purple?
Or if we read right to left
And not left to right
Or read books upside down
Or the way everyone has a different voice
A different way they communicate
A different way their tongue curves each accent
And so you told me those words
The same ones that changed my life
Sensing happiness I never knew existed
Changing my life for the better
Or so I thought...
Because you told me the truth one day
That those words you said weren't true
And that you didn't actually feel the same way
Crushing me down to the very core of this earth
Past the tectonic plates shifting among us
Malt and lava burning my skin like fire
And I knew from that day forward
I would never quite be the same again
Because after falling in love with you
I realized words mean nothing
