James' POV:
Remus had been ignoring us for a month now, Lily Evans had looked murderous each time one of us even looked at her.The detentions were awful, once we got to go into the Forbidden Forest, we saw something terrifying, the 3 of us had been left sleepless that day.
Rumors would fly around like protesting fires against water, I could hear their whispers and hisses echoing in every corner of the castle. Everyone still wondered what had happened to Severus Snape, the skinny, scrawny, greasy-haired Slytherin boy who always was used as a punching bag for the Marauders.
Everyone suspected it was us who brought the mystical disappearance of the snake, but each time it was brought up the Gryffindors were inveighing against it because us 4 were, as everyone within the lion sigil house stated, brightest of the year and great people.
Every time Remus, Sirius, Peter, or I came within a measurement of two feet to the red-headed girl, Lily Evans, we got a hex, which engraved in us to avoid her by any means possible.
I always saw Lily go to the hospital wing, every. Single. Day. She went to visit the grease-ball. The vermin was taking my future wife from me, my future was practically falling into diminutive pieces right in front of my eyes.
At breakfast this morning, loud, cacophonous, exchanges of words had forced me to listen in to all the hushed comments. "Did you see?" One Gryffindor that looked disgusted at whatever they had discovered. The only words that had ingrained and drilled into my head were 'He's back', I wanted to ascertain it for myself.
"Where did you see him?" I snarled harshly, gripping the 4th year's shoulder, which frightened him, likely to the very core. "I-I saw him in the halls today." The boy stammered, I frantically looked around the Slytherin table trying to find my victim. But no, he wasn't present in the vicinity. "All right there Prongs?" Sirius buoyantly remarked, "You look mad." I shook my head lightly, giving up on searching for the particular Slytherin.
"Did you hear? People said they saw him." I said, confusion created a concoction of itself and anger; a deep, dark, hatred that seemed to be bottomless.
Sirius' face darkened and Remus' head jerked up from his book, after a long while of not hearing his smooth, river-like, calm voice, it seemed like I was hearing it for the first time. Merlin did I miss Remus. "You better find him and apologize, or at least be civil to him. Don't put on your red gloves and immediately mark everything with them like a madman once you see him." Remus snapped.
His eyes were narrowed to slits as he studied the duo, Peter's face seemed to brighten, "I don't know Remus, will he forgive them?" He asked, his squeaky tone was filled with curiosity. Peter was the only one able to talk to Remus, he had apologized to Snivellus and so had Remus, which pissed me off since he was supposed to be 'loyal' to us.
"Apologize? Remus, me and that word don't mix together in a sentence." Sirius retorted, nudging my shoulder. "He got himself into trouble, and maybe I do feel some remorse in the deepest, darkest pits of my stomach, but I'll never apologize to him. He didn't die since I had called the professors, he should apologize to us and thank us instead us for doing that." I swiftly finished. Sirius chimed in with a satisfied nod.
Remus' face drooped and so did Peters, Remus' golden eyes returned back to the, 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' and he again, paid no mind to our odious declarations on the topic of Snivellus.
————-
Sirius and I made our way towards Care of Magical Creatures. I didn't get why I needed it at all but it was fun. Peter and Remus had parted their ways from us towards Charms. Then I saw him. The Slytherin didn't look at all like himself, Lily was dragging him along to the same subject we were going to and they didn't seem to notice.
His steps were limped and halting and he kept hissing from discomfort each 10 steps. "Oi Snivellus! Hurry up!" Sirius shouted, Snape turned his head towards us, the look of pure horror carved itself on his face.
I memorized his features, a much thinner frame, very pale, one would think he was on the brink of death at this very moment. A long thin scar tracing from the start of his jaw to somewhere downwards was almost completely hidden by a cascade of long, black hair, that didn't look as greasy as always but looked rather soft and smooth. And another cicatrix below his eye was also there. The only thing that had stayed about his appearance were his eyes, they were still mellow, spiral-like, and pitch black, but they had a ravenous spark in them now.
"Potter. Black." Lily said threateningly, her eyes burned with rage. "Come closer and I'll see you on your way to hell." She vocalized, we grimaced and backed away, Snivellus again went to the class with the same pace, Lily didn't look annoyed at all, but concerned. They sped up deliberately which surprised me since Snape was limping and grimacing at every step he'd taken.
Somehow, thankfully, we weren't late. Lily and Snivellus made their way towards a Slytherin girl with long, hazel hair with matching eyes. I'd tried to remember her name, gossips told she was Muggle-born and in Slytherin which was quite odd.
It was stupid, really, she looked as innocent as Snivellus. "Padfoot, what's her name?" I asked, making a gesture towards the girl who was chattering with the other two. "Annabelle. Why do you suddenly have an interest in her?" He responded. I said nothing to answer, and came back to work with pushing in a young Quintaped into the box we were given.
After everyone was finished, which left us breathless because the beasts had struggled so much, we left for Herbeology, Snivellus looked pained but I ignored it. The remorse that night seemed like a faraway, imaginary thing. I hated him even more now.
———————
Herbeology was a pain in the arse, the Verner (A/N: a plant I made up for Herbeology, it's not actually existent in the HP universe!) had almost poisoned me with its vicious thorns that launched themselves at anyone who dare touch it. It had left a hole on my dragon-hide gloves.I cursed under my breath, "Since Snivels is back, wanna prank him today?" Sirius mischievously asked as we headed for Defense Against Dark Arts, surely we could make a fool of Snivellus there. I nodded.
The Slytherins and the Gryffindors almost always had Defense Against Dark Arts together, the vile snake almost never missed a class.
Remus shot me and Sirius a glare (which Peter didn't see because he was at the front of the dungeons) once he saw our delinquent smirks. I searched for Snivellus hungrily and noticed his usual, shrimp-like, posture that made his long hair cascade over his face. He was hunched over his habitual 'Advanced Potion Making' book, and was writing something in his scrawled, extremely incomprehensible, cursive chirography.
Lily was sitting next to Bellatrix Black, who was looking pleased with the remarks of Lily. And the same girl, Annabelle, sat with Snivellus, looking over his shoulder at his book in confusion and adoration.
I stared at his back, drilling my eyes into him. He seemed to squirm slightly in his seat, to which I took that as a win and began finally paying attention to the class.
——————-
The teacher had went on and on about how important it was for us to not fail our O.W.Ls. She was just like McGonagall with the topic. Seriously, perforating that into our heads was unnecessary.Sirius was tapping on the desk which distracted me. I obnoxiously smiled and searched for something particular within my book-bag. A glitter bomb. I nudged Sirius as the teacher was babbling about something inaudible to me.
He stopped his unpleasant tapping and looked at me, then the glitter bomb, then to Snivellus. I understood his plan without even a need to talk. We would throw the bomb at him, leaving him to be humiliated.
Oh dear, Lily would probably be foaming at the mouth at me yet it's better than to miss an amazing plan for a prank...
A/N: Sorry I haven't updated this in quite a while. I was kinda busy and I'm currently sick (started today) but I decided to treat you to a new chapter! If you have any concerns about my wording, like words you don't know, don't be afraid to ask! Also, this will incur some ocs for the purpose of the story. Have a great day and remember; you are loved!
