Kate stared at me. I stared back.
"Hello." She said snidely, and returned to whatever she was doing.
"Why are you here?" I asked a nicely as possible.
"I'm your new assistant, duh." She snapped her gum at me, a disgusting act I always hated.
I nodded reluctantly and asked her why she was sitting at my desk. She said she was using it today because hers would be here tomorrow. She also delivered a message form Mona that I could take today off, because there was nothing for me to do. I nodded and gladly left.
I thought about what it would be like to have Kate as an assistant. I wouldn't be chatting with her during work or out of work that's for sure. I would love to stay as far away from her as possible. But my office wasn't exactly spacious. It looks like we were going to be pretty up close and personal.
I got home and got into my jim jams, my day-off routine kicking in. I sat on my couch and watched re-runs of Glee. When I had watched them all (I can't watch a show twice, it bores me) I called Holly.
"Hey Jones, what's up?"
I immediately told her about what happened with Kate. I told her about the bitch stealing my desk. I did conveniently leave out the part about Hollis altogether. What she didn't know won't hurt her.
"Sounds rough." she said, detached. I got a little irritated with her for not being concerned.
"Are you okay?" I asked, as a good friend should, even though I was obviously wrapped up in my own dilemma.
"Sorta, Joe and I have been fighting a lot lately. And some nights, when we do, he dosen't come home."
"Oh my gosh, Holls that's terrible."
"I know, I'm..I'm just worried."
"You guys will work it out, you always do."
"I hope so."
We talked for awhile longer and then she said she had to get back to work. I wished her well, I was the kind of person who hurt when others were hurting. I was very empathetic, always have been.
I laid down on my couch and laid my head on the head rest. I let myself slowly drift off, dreaming about my fantasy wedding. I always wanted a big, princess wedding. With the white pouffy dress, the doves, the 7 tier cake. It was a day you only got to have once (hopefully only once) it might as well be special.
I was about to sink into subconsciousness, I heard a knock at my door. I got up sleepily and opened the door.
There, in all his adorableness (okay, I admit it.) was Hollis, carrying a couple of grocery bags.
"What are you doing here? How'd you find my house."
"That time we shared a cab...and I'm here to make you cookies."
"Why?"
"There 'sorry I didn't tell you I had a girlfriend' cookies. I was going to get you a cake, but the guy at the store said that it was too long to write on it." He smiled, and I let him in.
"You know you don't have to do that."
"I want to." he said simply, making his way into my kitchen. I watched him as he set up all his ingredients. He fished around my kitchen like it was his own, which I didn't mind.
We chatted lightly as he mixed and stirred and added. I watched him curiously, stunned by the abruptness of his visit.
By the time he had finished the dough, my kitchen was a mess. The was flour and sugar everywhere. I scooped some up and flicked it at Hollis's face playfully.
"Oh you are so dead." he whispered threateningly and I jumped off my stool and hopped away from him.
"If you can catch me."
He did. Effortlessly. He grabbed me and threw me down on the couch. He held both of my hands in one of his, and tickled me with the other.
"Hollis.....stop....please...come on..." I said between giggles. He finally stopped and went back to making cookies. I followed him into the kitchen, watching as he made long, easy strides. Everything about Hollis was easy, I was getting used to that.
He scooped out the cookies evenly onto a baing sheet and handed me the spoon. I licked it slowly, savoring the best part of making cookies.
"You really are cute, you know."
"Hollis." I spat. "Don't say that."
"Why not." He tested, setting the oven timer and leaning against the counter.
"You have a girlfriend, who by the way, is my new assistant."
"Your kidding...anyway, you know I would dump her in a second for you."
I blushed, I couldn't help it. I still told him to behave, but he just smirked at me.
The cookies came out of the oven ten minutes later, and we decided to watch a movie while we ate them.
"How about Saw V?"
"I don't like scary movies," I admitted.
"Oh, come on, live a little." he gave me a sweet smile, and I agreed. But I wasn't happy about it and I made it known to Hollis.
The movie was the most gruesome thing I had ever seen. 10 minutes in, I was already sick to my stomach.
"You know they say that these are based on true stories." Hollis informed me. I squealed and he put his arm around me. Instead of moving away, I moved closer, tucking my head in the crook of his shoulder.
It was the most disgusting, bloodiest, and most horrible two hours of my life. I would never know why people chose to watch those movies. I told this to Hollis.
"Its the thrill babe." he said simply.
"I don't like 'the thrill' very much."
"Hey, you hang out with me right?"
"You consider yourself thrilling?"
He nodded. I thought about it, maybe he was right. Those little things that I liked about him had to to with the fact that he was funny and laid-back. I guess aside from my boring life, he was the only fun I'd had in awhile.
"I think its time for you to go."
"Have it your way, hun." He said, getting up to leave. "There's one thing you forgot to do, its a rule when someone makes something for you oh-so generously."
"What's that?" I said, folding my arms over my chest and looking at him.
"Kiss the cook."
I smiled and planted one on his cheek, "You really are something Hollis."
"I get that a lot."
