Chapter 4

"Tess, are you gay? And if you were would you ever date me? And if you weren't would you ever think about stuff like that?" Alicia asked Tess. Alicia was scared of what Tess would say. She was afraid that Tess would just walk out of the room and go home. And just as Tess was about to say something, Alicia's mom came through the door.

"Hi Tess, hi sweetheart." Alicia's mom, Emily said. "Sorry to interrupt your conversation girls, but Tess would you like to stay for dinner tonight?" Emily was standing in the doorway of Alicia's room, waiting for Tess to answer her question.

"Yes, I would love to stay for dinner." Tess said to Emily. Emily smiled and walked out the door, shutting it behind her.

Tess and Alicia were both quite. Thinking. Tess was thinking about what her answer would be to Alicia's question. And Alicia was thinking about what Tess would say about her question.

They both stayed quite for about 30 minutes. When Emily called to both Tess and Alicia saying that dinner was ready.

They both went downstairs not saying a word to each other. They were both too scared to talk to each other because they didn't want to say the wrong things. They all sat down at the table and began to eat.

Alicia broke the silence. "Mom, where is dad? Is he at work?" She was confused why her dad wasn't home because he was normally home for dinner.

"Yes, he is still at work. He will be home soon, but not in time to catch the end of dinner." Emily said to her daughter.

"Why is he working late?" 

"He is working overtime to make more money. They only allow overtime at work once a year."

"Ok. Thanks mom." Alicia said to her mom. And then they all went back to eating and silence fell upon them.

A knock came at the door and Emily got up to answer it. Emily answered the door. Standing in the doorway was Alicia's friend Luca. Luca has been Alicia's friend since they were in fourth grade. 

Alicia noticed that Luca was at the door and got up and ran to him. She jumped into his arms and he spun around with her in his arms. "What are you doing here Luca?" Alicia asked. She was so happy that he was there because it was getting too awkward between Alicia and Tess. 

"I came by to see you and Tess. I wanted to know if you guys wanted to go do something together, like maybe go bowling." Luc said to both Alicia and Tess. 

"Yes, I would love to go do something with the three of us." Tess said. Tess was happy that Luc had showed up because things were getting so awkward between Tess and Alicia that it was starting to get uncomfortable. And with Luc around it wouldn't be too awkward between Tess and Alicia. 

"That would be so much fun Luc! Thanks for thinking of us." Alicia said to Luc while she was still hugging him. She was so happy that Luc came by their house. It was getting to awkward between Tess and Alicia for her taste. And she hadn't seen Luc in such a long time, she couldn't wait to hang out with him.  "Mom, can me and Tess go out with Luc, please????"

"Sure, go ahead and have fun. Just don't do anything stupid." Emily told Alicia and Tess. 

They were so excited that they ran upstairs, grabbed their jackets, and ran outside to the car and got in. Luc just started laughing and left, closing the door behind him. Emily was laughing when the girls left with Luc. Emily went back to the table, finished up her dinner, put the dishes away, and then went to watch tv in her room.
