The next day had whizzed in like a bullet but it was not as fast as the death of Korede that had become the major news on everyone's lips. I wondered how I would tell Tari about what I had found out yesterday, and even the beautiful meal in front of me did not topple the fear that consumed me.
"Hadassah," Tari said, tapping my hand.
I turned to face her.
"Where were you?" she asked.
"What do you mean?"
"I was talking to you but your mind was elsewhere. Is everything okay?"
"I am fine, just a little bit tired."
"And you think that I will be that silly lie of yours?" She rolled her eyes.
"I am not lying."
"I know that you are still shaken by Korede's death, so you don't have to lie to me."
"I am not, I am over him already."
"I am not saying that you are not over him but I can see guilt written all over your face. Was it his place you rushed to yesterday?"
My next words became stuck in my throat, she had asked the one question that I did not want her to ask.
"Hadassah, give me an answer. Was it his place you went to? Were you able to meet him? Or do you know how he died? Is that why...."
"Really, Tari, yes, I admit that I am still shaken by the news of his death and I believe that you are being insensitive by asking all those questions. Please, I don't feel too well."
"I am sorry, I just want my mind to be filled up with things that are not." Her voice dropped and it occurred to me, that Tari thought I had something to do with his death.
"You think I killed him."
"What do you mean?" She was taken aback by questions but I saw on her face that she didn't believe me, my best friend had no trust in me.
"I know you think I killed him."
"What nonsense are you spewing out of your mouth?"
"Of course, you have every right to think like that. I was consumed with so much hatred and that could have made me kill him."
"Can you keep quiet!" She calmed down when she noticed everyone in the cafeteria had turned to us. "I am sorry, I shouldn't have shouted at you."
I couldn't believe my ears, Tari had no right to apologize, she didn't even trust me–her best friend–and this broke me.
"You don't have to apologise, whatever I am saying is the truth."
