Sitting by Jupiter's bedside, Caine's eyes grew heavy. Blinking once, then twice, he found himself alone. Jumping to his feet, he called for Jupiter, hearing no reply. He turned to exit the room, standing inside an abandoned, war-torn warehouse. "Jupiter!" he loudly repeated.
"Hiya Pup," a familiar voice spoke.
He pivoted sharply. "Jams? What-what are you doing here?"
"Well, I'm not really here, am I?" She strolled past him, taking a few moments to eye his form. "You're doing alright for yourself. Got yourself a really sweet gig guarding a royal. Nice. Assignments like that don't come around to the likes of us."
"True," he admitted.
"But there's a lot more at stake for you?"
Caine dropped his gaze. "Yeah, there is."
"She's very pretty."
"Beautiful, in fact," he corrected.
"She's more of a damsel type, and really depends upon you."
"Yes. She needs me."
Jams smirked, leaning closer to him. "Well, Pup. You finally found the girl of your dreams. So... why am I here?" He didn't answer. "What happened wasn't your fault. It could have just as easily been you. Then I'd be the one with your cushy assignment. Though I don't think your cute little royal would be into me, quite as much as she's into you."
"Jams," he whispered, his guilt blazing across his face.
"I hope you remembered everything I've taught you?"
He grinned. "How do you think I got her to fall in love with me in the first place?"
"You old sly dog," she jabbed.
Caine chuckled, lamenting, "I miss you, Jasmine."
"You're not getting soft on me, are you Pup?"
"Maybe. I am 900 years old."
"Wow. I didn't think our kind could live for 900 years. Pfft, you're an old man."
"I am, thanks to you."
"You certainly can't turn for me, since you've already turned for her. The deal is sealed?"
"Yeah."
"Look out for her," Jams ordered.
"I will."
"Look out for yourself too. If you were honest with your little royal, I probably wouldn't show up as much."
"Jams!" Caine awoke.
"Mr. Wise?" Bob questioned, standing in the hallway.
"Bob?" Caine turned to look at him.
Jupiter aroused from sleep. "Caine," she called to him. "What happened?" He exhaled, relieved.
