Aisha and I would have signed up for Cobra Kai sooner, but it took a couple of months of convincing for her parents to let her do karate. I was gonna do what Miguel said, I just wasn't gonna tell mine anything. If his sensei didn't care, then I didn't care. I acted like everything was fine with my family, I didn't want them to suspect anything was wrong or what I was planning. I smiled and I laughed for months to keep it up, and it seemed to be working. Dad never talked to me about the karate training ever again nor did he even try to bring it up. Nobody asked about it like it didn't happen and that was probably for the best. Ever since the conversation we had at the dinner dad's been off lately, like something was bothering him, but funny enough I don't think it was about me.
Sam and Yasmine and now Moon weren't really talking to each other. I know I hated Yasmine, but I didn't intend for Sam to lose all of her friends not even Aisha wanted to forgive Sam for the dance just yet. Sam had been so sad lately; I didn't want to ask her about what went down between her and Yasmine.
"Are you sure this is the right place?" I asked Aisha cautiously.
"How many places say 'Cobra Kai' with a big ass snake on the front? I'm pretty sure this is the right place, Leia." I was starting to get cold feet maybe this wasn't a good idea. No pull you're shit together, you said you were gonna do this, no backing out now. Aisha opened the door; we walked in to see Miguel and a man with blond hair on a mat in the middle of the dojo.
"What the hell? No yoga till five. No matter how bad you need it," was the first thing he said to us. Well, that's rude, I didn't like that.
"We're actually here for karate. We saw your website. It said there was supposed to be a session today," said Aisha. I glanced at Miguel giving him a small smile which he returned, happy to see some of his friends finally came to try out.
"I appreciate you guys coming in, but there are no girls in Cobra Kai." What? Miguel never said anything about that.
"Why not?" I questioned.
"Same reason there aren't women in the army. Doesn't make sense," Miguel's Sensei tried to tell us.
"But...there are women in the army." I whisper to Aisha a little too scared to correct him. Was he being serious? I mean he looked serious, but no one was that stupid right?
Miguel interjected "Uh, Sensei, I need to show you something in the office," they walked off the mat and bowed to it before entering the office.
I could hear them whispering from the other room, but it didn't seem like Aisha could hear them, God bless good ears.
"Don't give me that 'sexist' bullshit. Women just aren't meant to fight. They have tiny hollow bones." Woah okay. That's a crazy statement.
"Aren't you desperate for new students?" Miguel begged.
"Yes, but this isn't a knitting class. This is a dojo," his sensei said it like it was obvious.
"Look, the kids at school call Aisha names, make fun of her," Miguel began.
Then he's sensei mumbled something I couldn't hear.
"Her dad is Isaiah Robinson. Hall of Fame lineman for the Chargers."
"Yeah, so you're saying it's genetic. Her love for twinkies comes from her dad?" What was he talking about now I'm so confused.
"No, I'm saying her families loaded and so is Leia's and they're paying customers. But you don't need the money, right? Look Leia at least has what it takes, she broke a girl's nose and mutilated her face, look. People literally call her 'Beast' at school Sensei," Damn it Miguel not that name again, I glance over to see him showing his Sensei his phone probably showing him the video of Yasmine and me. I couldn't see his reaction to it, but he whispered an 'Alright' and came out of the office while I looked away, so it didn't seem like I was listening.
