The ride home was silent. Dad didn't care to ask me if I knew this was gonna happen, he wouldn't even look at me. Which gave me the idea that he already knew it was me to begin with but was too scared to hear it come out of my mouth. He wasn't the one that bothered me so much. Robby and Sam have been quiet since we left the festival. Sam seething in pain and Robby in irritation.
Everyone was exhausted by the time we got home, escaping to our separate rooms in hopes of finding sleep after this long day of heat and failure. Just as I'm getting ready for bed, I hear a knock on my door.
When I opened it, Robby stood there waiting "Did you do it?" He wasted no time with a greeting.
"What?" I asked, but I know I'm caught.
He pushes pass me into my room. He pulls me with him and closes the door behind him, turning us and pressing my back to the door with his hands pinning my arms to my side. This felt an awful lot like when I was having a panic attack, same door, same room, and the same boy now instead of comforting me; he was confronting me.
I wasn't scared of him. Not of the scowl he wore or the grip of his hands. I could get out of this if I wanted too, but at the moment I felt like I deserved it. For him to be mean to me. This is the price you pay for cheap revenge.
"Don't play stupid. The valley fest did you tell Cobra Kai that we were gonna perform?" He spoke sternly. It seems he also had his suspicions but was scared of the answer. He didn't want it to be me.
We had once promised not to lie to each other, and I refuse to break that promise now because I owe him that much.
I choked on my own guilt "...Yes," my voice was so quiet it was a whisper, and my heart was racing "But I didn't know they were gonna go on in the middle of Miyagi-do's set."
"Why?" He didn't get it, he didn't understand. I had thought of all people he would understand.
"Why?" I swallowed; I can't do this anymore. "Are you serious? My dad called Cobra Kai a snake in the grass publicly in a commercial and is trying to run us out of business. He is blatantly trying to rip the most important thing to me right out of my hands. Do you really think he would teach me Miyagi-do if there is no more Cobra Kai? How would you feel if your dad did that to you?"
He says nothing just avoiding eye contact, but I dig in because for once I need someone to get it.
"You'd be pissed. Angry. Vengeful. Just like how you're feeling right now. You'd want pay back for him trying to take away something you cared about because what right does he have when he was never there to begin with."
His grip loosens but doesn't let go and he's taking deep breathes.
"Just look at us. Our parents didn't care about what we did until we were on the other side. Then suddenly it's all personal. I don't know about you, but I refuse to be what my parents want anymore," I shrug his hands off of me a little too harsh "I'm sorry for what Cobra Kai did. But the worlds not fair... so why should we be."
"If you hate Miyagi-do so much..., why don't you hate me? And I want the honest truth."
How could anyone hate Robby Keene.
"You want me to be honest with you? Well, here it is. My dad chose you," I put my hands on his chest and push him back off of me as I spoke. "A young healthy strapping boy. The son he never had because lord knows he doesn't try hard enough with Anthony. You know why because Anthony isn't interested in the same things he is. He's not the son he imagined but you are. And I don't blame you because I'm doing the exact same thing. I found someone who was willing to take a chance on me. That saw the potential not the broken foundation. You found qualities in my dad that you were lacking in yours and I found the same. You needed guidance and I needed encouragement. That... that is why I could never hate you. You and I play the game the exact same way even if I'm supposed to hate you. Even though you are what the guys in Cobra Kai call the enemy I have nothing ...but the upmost respect for you. That's something that could never change."
