I choked, inhaling some Oreo bits wrong the moment I heard the voice on the other end.
Deep, sexy, gravelly, it's Officer Hoffman. I start coughing uncontrollably, gagging some while I clear my airway.

"...you good, kid?

I suck in some air finally, wheezing as I catch my breath. I reach for my juice and take a big swig. After a few seconds it feels like I can finally breathe again, and I let out a shaky breath.

Hoffman didn't just text me, he called me. Cue hesitant happy dance.

"Yeah...fine." I mumble, feeling only slightly humiliated at the same time. "So... uh, how much of that did you hear, exactly?"

"Let's just say I wouldn't have pegged you for the type to blackmail." He exhales in amusement.

Good, he didn't hear Penny hit on me. For some reason that itself is wildly embarrassing. She's gross.
"I like to think of it more as getting paid for my troubles," I laugh.

"May I ask who she is exactly?" His stupid hot voice riddled with curiosity.

"My dad's shitty girlfriend." I grumble.

"She seems like an... interesting person." He chuckles, voice laden in sarcasm, and I hear the soft "click" of a lighter in the background on his end.

I sigh, leaning my head back against the wall.
"You have no idea..."

Silence.

"...Look man, no offense, but why'd you call me back?"

He exhales a soft laugh. " '425-722-2137, hit me up. -Luca' Those are your words, are they not Lucas?"

I swallow hard, feeling burning heat go straight to my face. "Yeah, so?"

"So why did you give me your number, then?"

"I don't know, what made you decide to actually call back?" I retort, shutting my laptop.

"Lucas, I'm not answering your question 'till you answer mine," he laughs.

I curse under my breath, fidgeting with the laptop charging cord.

"What's it matter? Not like you wanted to talk to me anyway." I complain, hoping he'll just drop the whole thing. Sure, I could just hang up, but I don't want to... I like his voice. I like the way he says my name.

"That's not an answer," he scolds. Voice now authoritative, but playful.

... It kind of turns me on.

I sucked in a breath, my heart pounding in my chest. What would I lose by telling him? Nothing, I guess. Officer Hoffman's opinion of me won't change the trajectory of my life, and I can always hang up on him at any point.

Fuck it, he wants the real answer? I'll fess up.

"Look, I thought you were hot, okay? I thought maybe there was a chance you might be into it, maybe wanna hit me up. I know it was fucking stupid of me. I get it. So, if you're just gonna make fun of me go ahead and hang up already." My heart is in my throat, and the silence on his end might send me into cardiac arrest.

After just moments, but what felt like an eternity, a soft chuckle leaves him.

"Eighteen..." he sighs.

"Yeah, so?" I roll my eyes. Officer Hoffman saw my license; he knows how old I am. Why's he gotta rub it in this way? I get it. I'm no more than a stupid kid to him.

He sighs. "So, that makes you legal, Lucas."

Shoving an Oreo in my mouth, my mind races with possibility, hoping and praying he'll give me a chance. "Mmhmm?" is all I can manage, mouth full of more Oreo.
