CHAPTER 1

My dearest daughter Harlee. .

I always knew there would be a time that I’ll be leaving you. And so I carried this note in my pocket for 4 years. I guess you’re probably reading this now with no clue what happened to me. Well, in life, there comes a time when our borrowed bodies come back where they came from and our souls part ways with it, to Heaven. I never knew that it’d come sooner than I thought. I’m sorry for the years that I will not be around anymore to watch you grow up, from teaching you how to ride a bicycle to driving a car. And also seeing you claim your first boyfriend along with getting married. My deepest apology. But do know, that even though I’m not beside you all the time, I am watching you from afar. And do know, that I love you very much. Your mother loves you too, even if you haven’t seen her. I took you away to an island after your mother and I agreed to hide you. She lives in town, her name is Adelle Queene. Don’t worry; I’m sure you’ll both meet soon. Please keep yourself safe.

Your Father,

Elric Embers

My name is Harlee Monique Q. Embers. And I’ve been reading this letter for 13 years over and over again. And now I’m 17. It’s like a ritual now. Well, I don’t get all emotional every time I read it, only when I really wished they were here. And that happened twice or thrice I think.

There’s no need to be lonely all the time anyway, there’s lots of thing to do to keep myself happy. That’s what Uncle Fred always told me to do, “Keep yourself happy!” he always cheered. Uncle Fred’s like an old walking smiley face with a body. He was the one who rescued me from the wooden boat in the middle of the sea and took me back to the island.

As I recall from that memory, my dad was going to take me back to town to reunite with my mother. I guess that was when his soul got returned to the heavens. It was a good thing I was asleep that time, or else I wouldn’t get much sleep. I always wondered how he died. Like. Did someone kill him? Or did he commit suicide? Or the worst. Did a shark eat him? It gave me the creeps. Uncle Fred just told me that he saw me alone in the boat with a letter stuck inside my shirt. And so he carried me to his boat.

“Harlee!”, a feeble voice called from downstairs.

“Yes, Uncle Fred? I’ll be right down in a sec!”

My yellow sheets were dangling by the bedside. I carefully folded it, positioning the starfish print on front. Darn. It was starting to fade.

I grabbed my hairbrush by my mirror full of shells and started brushing my short red hair. Yup, I’m a redhead! I have a pixie cut, but a bit longer than that. I don’t let it grow long on Chelin Island, because it’s always so stifling hot here. If you have long locks, you’re going to have a rough time. With all those hair sticking to your shoulders and nape.

I stared at the mirror and turned on the radio. I smiled and observed my face.

…You say it's not what you do,

It's what you're thinking of

Well I think it's just an excuse

It's what you put across..

I noticed my brown eyes were a bit slanted. And my eyebrows were slightly bushy; they have never been touched by any object of sharpness. For like the day I was born.

..And I don't wanna to be the one

Only overjoyed

Yeah I don't wanna be the one
