STORY TIME

Prince Menelaos had always felt a sense of duty towards his people, and as the youngest of three brothers, he often felt the pressure to prove himself. His brothers, Ariston and Alexandros, were already married and had produced heirs to the throne. Menelaos, on the other hand, remained unwed. One day, as Menelaos walked through the halls of the palace, he overheard his brothers discussing the need to find a suitable wife for him."We cannot have our youngest brother remain unmarried forever," Ariston said."Indeed, it is time for him to take a wife and produce an heir," Alexandros agreed.Menelaos felt a sense of unease at the thought of being forced into a marriage for the sake of duty. He had always been content with his role as prince and felt no need for a wife or children. But as he walked away from his brothers' conversation, his thoughts turned to Kassandra, the oracle of Sparta. He had always admired her intelligence and strength, and over time, he had come to realize that he was beginning to develop feelings for her.Menelaos knew that he could not simply confess his feelings to Kassandra. As a responsible prince, he had duties to attend to and could not risk disrupting her work as an oracle. But the thought of never being able to tell her how he felt weighed heavily on his heart. He resolved to focus on his duties as a prince and put his feelings for Kassandra aside, at least for the time being. But deep down, he knew that his heart would not easily forget her.Menelaos' brothers call him over to tell him about potential brides. As they begin listing women he felt no interest in he watched some flowers swaying in the wind, resembling the flowing robes of the oracle. As Menelaos' brothers continued to discuss potential brides, his mind began to wander. He couldn't help but think about Kassandra and how he had been harboring feelings for her for some time now. He watched as some nearby flowers swayed in the wind, their petals resembling the flowing robes of the oracle. He knew he should be paying attention to his brothers' conversation, but his mind was elsewhere. He had to see Kassandra, to tell her how he felt. But as a responsible prince, he knew he couldn't simply interrupt her duties as an oracle. He would have to find a way to speak with her in private. Finally, one of his brothers noticed his distraction and asked, "Menelaos, are you even listening to us?"Menelaos shook himself out of his thoughts and replied, "Apologies, I was lost in my own thoughts. Please, continue."But try as he might, he couldn't focus on the conversation. All he could think about was Kassandra and how he could tell her how he felt.Ariston sighs, "Okay, out with it Menelaos what has you so occupied that you can't even look at us while we talk about potential wives for you?"Menelaos clears his throat, trying to push his thoughts of Kassandra aside. "It's nothing, Ariston. Just lost in thought," he replies, forcing a smile. But Alexandros notices his brother's unease and leans forward. "Come on, Menelaos. You can tell us. We're your brothers."Menelaos hesitates for a moment before finally giving in. "It's Kassandra," he admits, feeling a weight lift off his chest. "I've been...thinking about her a lot lately."Ariston raises an eyebrow, surprised. "Kassandra? The oracle?"Menelaos nods, feeling his face heat up. "Yes. I know it's ridiculous. I shouldn't be thinking about her like this, but I can't help it."Alexandros chuckles. "Well, well. The prince has fallen for the oracle. Who would've thought?"Menelaos scowls at his brother's teasing. "It's not funny, Alexandros. I don't know what to do."Ariston rests a hand on Menelaos' shoulder. "Just talk to her, Menelaos. Tell her how you feel."Menelaos nods, feeling a glimmer of hope. "You're right. I should talk to her."But deep down, he knows it's not that simple. How could he, a prince, confess his feelings to an oracle? And what if she didn't feel the same way? The thought of rejection made his stomach churn.Menelaos sighs, "Never mind, it's no use anyways we're both far too busy to see each other outside of the occasional visit for a prophecy."Alexandros, the second prince, interjects with an idea. "Why don't we ask the Oracle about your love life, Menelaos? Surely, Kassandra would have some insight into your future prospects."Ariston scoffs, "That's a ridiculous idea, Alexandros. The Oracle's prophecies are meant for matters of state, not matters of the heart."But Menelaos looks thoughtful, "Perhaps Alexandros is right. It couldn't hurt to ask for some guidance."The brothers agree to visit Kassandra the next day and ask for her help. Menelaos is secretly pleased at the prospect of seeing her again, but he tries to hide it from his brothers. When the prince go to visit the Oracle the next day, they find Kassandra as she always is, dressed in flowing robes and sitting upon her wooden tripod. Kassandra looks up from her prophesying as she hears the sound of footsteps approaching. She recognizes the familiar presence of the three princes, and she prepares herself for their questions."Welcome, Your Highnesses," Kassandra says, offering a small nod. "What brings you to my chamber today?"Ariston steps forward, his expression serious. "We have come to seek your wisdom, Oracle. We wish to know what the future holds for my brother Menelaos, in matters of the heart."Kassandra raises an eyebrow, intrigued. "Is that so?" she asks, glancing at Menelaos briefly before turning her attention back to Ariston. "Very well, let me consult the gods."She closes her eyes and begins to murmur softly, her body swaying slightly as if in a trance. The princes watch in silence, waiting for the Oracle's vision to unfold. Finally, Kassandra opens her eyes and speaks. "I see...a great love in Menelaos' future," she says, her voice barely above a whisper. "But it will not come easily. There will be trials and tribulations, and he will need to be strong to overcome them."The princes exchange glances, intrigued by the Oracle's words. "Can you tell us more?" Alexandros asks.Kassandra shakes her head. "I'm sorry, but the visions are often unclear and open to interpretation. I can only give you what I have seen."The princes thank the Oracle and make their way out of the chamber, deep in thought. Menelaos lingers behind, his mind racing with the possibilities of what the Oracle has foretold. As he thinks over the prophecy, he decides that the prophecy can only mean that he should continue pursuing Kassandra and after enough work she may be his. After all, why wouldn't a woman eventually fall for a prince? Of course, Menelaos knew the thought was ridiculous and pompous, but he couldn't help how much he wanted to believe in a future with Kassandra.Menelaos spends the next few days trying to find ways to spend more time with Kassandra, hoping to win her heart. He accompanies her during her daily walks around the temple grounds, bringing her favorite snacks and engaging in conversation with her.But no matter how much time they spend together, Kassandra remains distant and guarded. She seems to be preoccupied with her duties as the oracle and is always quick to retreat back into her chamber when their conversations end.Menelaos begins to realize that winning Kassandra's heart will be more difficult than he initially thought. He can't simply rely on his status as a prince to win her over, he must show her that he genuinely cares for her and is willing to support her in her role as the oracle.Despite the challenges ahead, Menelaos remains determined to win Kassandra's heart and prove to her that he is worthy of her love.
