You carefully slid the window to your room shut. Even though it was still several hours to sunset, your room was dark due to the lack of sunlight streaming into your room.

"Where were you?" you yelped at the sound of your mom's voice and spun around wildly, pressing your back to the window.

"I was with a friend studying." You hastily lied and your mom's eyes narrowed at the lie.

"How were you able to study without your books?" she continued to pry in her cold, unbelieving tone. Her arms were crossed as she stared at you from her sitting position on your bed.

"I was helping him with his work." You continued to explain, "and I didn't need my stuff."

She scoffed, "you know you have a curfew. This is the second time you've broken it, even though you promised last time that it wouldn't happen again." She gestured for you to come closer, and with stiff, trembling steps you followed her command. There was a dissatisfied curl to her lip as she took note of your appearance, "what happened to your eye?"

"Nothing!"

"Ha!" the laugh was dry and mirthless as she looked down at you, "and I suppose your split lip is also nothing?" she grabbed onto your arm with a vice-like grip and pulled you closer, "I know of the things that happen in our neighborhood." Her voice was quiet, but there was a poisonous sneer mixed into it, "gangs, illegal fighting rings, spiteful mafias." You could practically count the teeth in her mouth by how close she was holding you, "a child like you shouldn't be coming home bruised and bloodied if you were just going to study with a friend." She suddenly pushed you to the ground and you yelped at the sudden movement and impact, "I will not have a target painted on my family's back because you decided to mess around with the mafia!"

"But I'm not," your voice trembled as you looked up at the uncaring gaze of your mother.

"I called Takahiko when you weren't home in time," you looked up at her in confusion. He was the owner of one of the small family-owned grocery stores in town and a friend of your mother's. "He said he saw you running around with a red-haired boy."

"He's my friend from school-" you feebly protested but you were cut off by your mother's stern voice.

"He's homeless." You fell silent, you didn't know how you could lie your way out of this one. Your mother suddenly felt so much more intimidating. Not only was she cold and strict, but she gathered her information and effortlessly cut you down. "I don't know why you're hanging out with that kid, but I want none of it. You no longer live under my roof."

You gaped at her, did you hear that right? Did she just kick you out? You stared at her, unmoving, from your position on the floor as your brain tried to process what she just said. "Are you deaf?" she yelled out as she stood up from her chair, "get out of here! I never want to see your face ever again!" she moved to slap you and you yelped and scrambled out of the way. You hastily grabbed your backpack before running out of the door. She still screamed at you the entire way, and even through the doorway of the house she was yelling.

It was dark, but your feet knew where to take you. It was weird running through the streets while the sun was down. The streets were sporadically lit, with the occasional streetlight, and public businesses that were still open also provided light as the yellow glow streamed through the windows. Brightly colored red, blue, and green neon signs dotted the scenery but it all seemed to fade into the distance. You could barely see as you ran, tears were streaming down your face and you weren't sure if your heavy breathing was due to your crying or from the exertion of running.

You practically burst through the tarp that was hiding the current base of the Sheep. "What the hell are you-" Shin's exclamation died in his throat as he saw your crying form. "What did you kids do?" he sighed as he heavily sat back down and patted the rags next to him for you to sit.
