Harry forced himself to keep walking, each step heavier than the last. His body was betraying him in ways he didn’t understand—flashes of pain, whispers in his ear, a pressure curling deep in his chest like a coiled serpent waiting to strike.

He exhaled sharply through his nose. Get to the dorm. Lie down. Ignore it.

But ignoring it was growing harder by the second.

The moment he turned the next corner, another jolt of pain shot through his spine, searing and unrelenting. It wasn’t the pain of a curse or a hex—he knew that sort of agony well. This was different. It was like something inside him was being forcefully rewritten.

His stomach churned.

The book.

Yes. That book from Potions. There had been something there, something about magical influences and their effects on the body. He had brushed over it at the time, but now—now—he needed every ounce of information he could get his hands on.

His vision blurred at the edges. The castle halls stretched and warped, as if space itself was shifting beneath his feet.

Harry braced a hand against the cold stone wall, forcing himself to breathe.

Then the voice came again.

"Your suffering is but your own."

He flinched.

It was too close this time, curling against his ear like icy breath, and yet—when he turned sharply, wand half-drawn—there was nothing.

No shadow.

No presence.

Just the empty corridor, stretching long and dimly lit before him.

His pulse thundered in his ears.

This wasn’t normal.

His magic wasn’t normal.

Not anymore.

He felt it shifting inside him, pulsing in waves that didn’t belong to him. It was like a second heartbeat, syncing and unsyncing in chaotic rhythm. He wasn’t losing control—not yet—but something was trying to take control.

And he didn’t like that.

Harry clenched his jaw, forcing himself to move again, one foot in front of the other. If he could just make it back, if he could just—

The pain surged.

This time, it wasn’t just his limbs or his jaw—this time, it gripped his chest like an iron vice, forcing him to stagger, to gasp for air as if something had knocked the wind from his lungs.

His knees nearly buckled.

He bit the inside of his cheek hard enough to draw blood, forcing his body to keep moving. If he stopped, if he hesitated—

No.

No.

He would not fall here.

He reached the staircase, fingers gripping the railing with more force than necessary as he dragged himself upward. His vision pulsed at the edges, his senses warping and stretching in ways that made his stomach lurch.

By the time he reached his dormitory, his skin felt feverish, his mind fogged with something he could neither name nor dispel.

But he was here.

The moment he stepped inside, he shut the door behind him, locking out the world beyond.

The silence was deafening.
