"As usual.... Topper was here, making sure we had food and I went to school." I snapped at her
"Riley Evelyn Thornton. You Do not get to speak to me that way." She tells me
"I am still your mother." She scolded me
"Whatever. See you in another month." I scoffed
I walked upstairs to my room and I heard her car start up as tears fall.

I was almost asleep when someone placed a hand over my mouth... If it wasn't for the hand over my mouth, my scream would've woken up my older brother.
Rafe sat on my bed as I sat up, tempted to turn the light on.
"Rafe. You scared the hell out of me."
"What?" He murmured. "You thought I was some prowler coming to attack you?"
"Are you okay?" I asked him
"My dad and I.... We had another fight. I pointed out how he favours Sarah."
"I know I'm a fuck up... I do."
"But I do love you. You know that right?"
"Yes Rafe. I know that." I nodded my head
"Good. Because I do love you so much. You mean more to me than anything else." He says and then placed a kiss on my temple.
"Go back to sleep, darling." He told me
I lay back down and he wraps his arm around my waist as I fall asleep.
I woke up to Rafe snoring lightly in my ear and I smiled at him.
Moments like this made me realise that Rafe could be a good guy if he wants but drugs made him into a very different person.

I walked downstairs and poured myself a glass of orange juice.
"Morning, mom here?" Topper asked me
"She was. But she left again." I told him
"I'm not surprised. Don't let it get to you okay kid, it's just how she is." He says
"I know. Trust me." I nodded
I walk out to the porch and I sat down as I felt the sun shine on my cheeks.
"Morning." Rafe kissed my head
"Good morning." I smiled up at him
"Did you sleep okay?" He asked me
"Yeah." I nodded
He sat down next to me and pulled me down on his lap as I snuggled into him.
