I walked quietly through the crowded hall, slipping past students talking a mile a minute about anything and everything. The same numbers bouncing above their heads as they walk. And yes that was the normal part of all of this. There were only around a hundred people left with my gift all of us having a different ability.

I could see people's danger level.

It's sort of a one out of ten thing. Like a normal child would have the number 1/10, that's the lowest meaning not dangerous at all. The highest was a 10/10. I have never met anyone with a number that high, and I don't think I ever want to.

I finally made it to my classroom, taking a seat in the back. I came to this school in the middle of the year, and I was getting used to the normal boring routine, sitting in the same seat every day. All my classmates know of my ability and are no longer surprised or as interested as they were when I first got here. It's the beginning of the new quarter and news of new students were echoing through the school.

A girl in my class, Jasmine, turns around in her seat to face me, a small smile on her lips, and the numbers 3/10 danced above her head. We weren't very close but we talked on occasion, mainly her telling me about the latest gossip. Her new topic of interest seemed to be the mysterious new students who were arriving today. "I heard her name is Jane," she said, practically bouncing in her seat. "Do you know where she's from, or why she moved?" I asked. I did really care in full honesty but I was still curious nonetheless.

"Nope, no one does. All I know is she is from another state, and there's this rumor that there was an incident at her old school and she needed to transfer. She also has a brother that's going to be in our class too but I don't know his name." When she finally finished, I grinned. "It sounds like you know more than you thought." She shrugged. "Again those are only rumors," she said before smiling wryly, "maybe they'll have an ability like you." I rolled my eyes. She knew people like me are rare, only one every couple generations, if any at all.

Our attention was turned back to the front of the room as the teacher entered, her numbers 4/10 floating just above the tight bun she was wearing. "Class, the new students have arrived, please treat them with respect," she announced, moving to the other side of the room to her desk, grabbing a couple of papers and looking over them. Two people that I didn't notice standing against the wall earlier, were now walking to the middle of the room where the teacher once stood. The teacher walked back, papers still in hand, and stood next to the pair.

There was a boy and a girl both my age and I realized that it was obviously Jane and her brother. Jane wore a blue and green flannel over faded blue jeans. Her brother had on a plain white T-shirt and blue jeans. The boy looked nervous, fiddling with his own fingers, and glancing around the room like he was about to be attacked at any second.

His sister was a whole different story. While he was an anxious mess she was absolutely emotionless. She looked around blankly, no emotion behind her brown eyes. I also noticed there was no resemblance between the two. No distinguishing similarity that labels them as siblings.

"Introduce yourselves please," the teacher told them just loud enough for the rest of us to hear. The pair glance at each other for a split second before looking back to the rest of the room so fast I might have just imagined it. The boy is the first to speak. "I'm Will Byers, and this is my step sister Jane." he ran his hand through his light brown hair, still as nervous as before while the teacher continued on to a long talk on respect and blah blah blah.

Jane never says anything, just keeps looking around at everyone with empty eyes. Her eyes finally met mine after making its rounds to the other students in the room. When she looks at me something steers in her eyes and for a split second I can see slight shock and fear flash in them. But as soon as it's there, it vanishes just as fast, replaced with the emptiness that was there before.

Will looked at me next, like he felt his sister's discomfort. He just stares at me for a a few seconds, seeming slightly confused. I just hold his gaze, not backing down. I didn't know what their problem with me was but I certainly wasn't going to be intimidated by some new kids.

His eyes slowly widened, fear written all over his face. He turned to Jane as if hoping he wasn't seeing what he thought he was, whatever that was. It's like they were worried, like they thought I knew something I wasn't supposed to.

Then I looked up at his head, my eyes widened to the size of dish plates. The number above his head said 8/10. How? How could someone who looked so nervous, like he couldn't hurt a fly, have the highest number I had ever seen. Yeah I've seen a few 6's in my life and one time a 7, but an 8?! When I turned back to his sister, I almost screamed. 10/10 floated ominously over her head. Both siblings' eyes turn to me and I realize whatever happened at their old school wasn't an accident.
