CHAPTER TEN
Khalifah walked into his father's office after he's let in and ambled towards the desk where his father was seated working on the desktop but dressed in a sportswear probably on his way out for a game.
Alhaji Sufyan was good in a number of sports, it's like a good hobby of his.
"Good morning, Sir." Khalifah greeted.
His father didn't respond and Khalifah took that as a cue to just keep standing. He knew perfectly what he did wrong.
A few minutes later, his father faced him, reclined on his chair. "Why weren't you at work yesterday?"
Khalifah cleared his throat, scratching behind his ear. "I took Yasmin to the hospital."
"Why?"
"She passed out in her room and wasn't responsive."
"How did you know?"
"Well, I uh... I went to her room to check up on her_"
"To check up on her? For what reason?"
Khalifah thought of an answer, but he knew his father wasn't ready to be convinced.
"Khalifah," He probed.
Khalifah gulped nervously, scanning his brain for what to say. "I uh... it was nothing personal."
"Personal," He reiterated callously, rising to his feet with a baseball bat in his hands. "Explain to me, Khalifah, the relationship between you and that swine."
"Yasmin?" He asked, staring straight at his father but the straight face he kept made Khalifah lower his gaze.
There's fleeting silence and Khalifah prompted himself to speak up. "Nothing."
"Then what's all this nonsense about?"
"I just... thought I should look after her."
A numbing pain sparked up from his knee up to his heart and forcing a groan out of his mouth as his father whacked him with the bat he's holding, sending him off balance.
"You thought you should..." Alhaji Sufyan tailed off angrily. "You had an assignment to report yesterday and of all reasons to miss work without calling in it has to be that slave?! Will you stand straight!" He ordered, forcing Khalifah to rise on his feet.
"I don't know what's going on in your head but you should put it straight. I will not condone lack of responsibility from you especially not at work. Just because you're my son doesn't give you a free ticket to do what you like and missing work will definitely not be tolerated. And I'll say this for the first and last time, the next time I hear your name and that imbecile's in the same sentence, I'm throwing her out of my house. So you better get your shit together!" He concluded.
Khalifah gulped, his teary eyes pinned on his feet.
"Answer me like a man!" He smacked him with the bat again and Khalifah managed to mutter a 'Yes Sir'.
"Now get out and you have thirty minutes to submit your assignment." He walked back to his desk.
"Yes, Sir." He fought back the tears until he's out of the office when one wretched drop found it's way across his face.t
