It started out as a normal day for Nycole. Wake up, get ready, and grab a quick bite while heading out the door to work. She worked at the local farmer's market in the downtown square. Chinatown was a relatively small town compared to the rest of San Francisco, but it was home to so many, including her.
As she made her way to work, she went along her usual route and took a moment to say hello to all she passed on her way. It was always the same people she greeted. "Good morning, Ms. Chen. You're work looks as beautiful as always." Nycole said with a wave, greeting the talented seamstress as she passed. "Oh! Thank you, dear child. Have a wonderful day." Ms. Chen said, waving back to her with a bright smile.
Nycole then made her way down a path that passed by the best ramen and sushi shop in town. "Good morning, Mr. Udon." Nycole said, stopping for a moment to smell the air. "Mmm...sure smells good. Is it something new?" She asked, coming over to investigate a little more. Mr. Udon looked to Nycole and gave her an amused chuckle. "Oh, no child. Though, you do flatter me. It's just my signature pork belly miso. I've been selling a lot of it recently and I can't imagine why." He said, stirring a giant pot of miso broth. He then grabbed a small bowl and dished up a little broth before offering the bowl to her. "Here. Tell me if it needs anything." He said, knowing she was always willing to help him with his flavors. Nycole gave a slight chuckle and accepted the bowl from Mr. Udon. She blew on it a little before bringing the bowl to her lips, taking a small sip. She closed her eyes and allowed the warm broth to activate her tastebuds. She hummed in thought for a moment, thinking if there was truly anything the broth needed. "Mmm...well, it's as amazing as always, Mr. Udon." She said before opening her eyes and taking a look at his spice rack. "But, I do believe it could use a little more ginger. Then it'll be perfect once again." She said before sipping the rest of her miso broth. Mr. Udon gave Nycole a nod of approval and smiled to her. "You sure know your flavors, Nyki. Thank you." He said before adding a heaping helping of minced ginger to the pot and stirring it. "It's always my pleasure, Mr. Udon. I'll be sure to stop by for lunch to see how that broth turned out. Bye for now!" She said with a smile and a wave to the master chef with spectacular ramen, and gourmet sushi, before heading back to work. Mr. Udon said his farewells and went straight to helping a customer.
There was only one more vital stop on her way to work, and that was Chai Bakery. The Chai family have owned, and ran, this bakery for generations. Today, Mr. Chai specializes in dumplings, rice cakes, and cream puffs, while Mrs. Chai specializes in mochi of all kinds, matcha desserts, and cakes for all occasions. They also supply the town with plenty of fresh bread everyday. "Good morning, Mr. and Mrs. Chai. Anything new today?" Nycole asked, poking her head behind the counter a little. Mrs. Chai gave a soft chuckle and gently shooed her away from behind the counter. "As a matter of fact, we do have something new today. We have been working on a new specialty and I think we finally perfected it." Mrs. Chai said as she handed Nycole a small brown paper sack. Nycole graciously accepted the bag and opened it up. She was immediately hit with a sweet, but savory, smell that warmed up her nose as much as the bag was warming her hands. "Oh wow...what is it?" She asked before reaching her hand in and pulling out a dark orange colored cake roll with what looked to be a cream colored frosting inside the roll. She took a small bite and closed her eyes as she allowed the flavors to swirl around her tastebuds. "It's a warm pumpkin spice roll with cream cheese frosting." Mrs. Chai said, Mr. Chai making his way over to them. "Oh my goodness...this is so good, you guys." Nycole said, opening her eyes again and nodding to the couple. "You better be prepared to sell out of these quick because this is heavenly." She said as she took another bite and hummed contently at the dessert in her hand. Mr. and Mrs. Chai both laughed a little and they nodded to Nycole. "Of course. We have several batches baking right now. But, I'm not sure if we'll have enough for when you stop by for lunch." Mr. Chai teased. Mrs. Chai elbowed him in the side a little, chuckling softly before looking to Nycole. "Don't worry, sweetheart. We'll have some waiting for you. I'll make a small batch just before you arrive." She said to Nycole, who had already finished her roll. She nodded to Mrs. Chai and smiled brightly. "Thanks, Mrs. Chai. You're the best." She said before making her way to the trash can to dispose of her paper sack. She then waved to the Chai couple and made her way out. "Thank you, guys! See you later." She said before finally finishing her way to work.
