                                                               Prologue

I kept running. My feet barely touched the ground as I quickened my pace. My heart was beating at a 100 miles per hour and I could hardly get oxygen to my lungs. My breathing was shallow and I could dimly see a faint light ahead of me as I sprinted through the dark hallways. It was so close yet so far....

I wanted so badly to reach the light but it seemed that the quicker I ran, the farther it pushed away. I was desperate. So desperate to reach it. I ran faster.

Tears were streaming down my cheeks at an unatural speed and my vision soon became blurred. This was a nightmare. A nightmare come true.

I could almost feel the cool, icy breath on the back of my neck and that sent my heart beat flying faster than before. I couldn't get caught. If I did...I would pay the consequence. It wouldn't be pretty.

I blinked away the wetness that covered my vision and nearly tripped over my own feet as I pumped my legs harder. The pain that shot up and down my body was unbearable. But I had to get away.

I then turned a corner, keeping an eye closely on the dim light, making sure it didn't leave me alone with the...the creatures I so despised. The ones that held me captive...torturing me...

I blew out a hard breath of air and not a second later began gasping for breath. My lungs burned as well as my body. The blood that trickled down the side of my face struck an open gash and I winced from the intense pain that went through my head. I was losing blood, quickly, but I had not time to think about that.

I knew that I wouldn't be able to run long, for I was growing weary and weak. I would eventually run out of steam and the adrenaline that ran through my body, the very thing that kept me alive and running right now, would soon stop and I would collapse to my doom.

I swallowed, my throat burning with thirst, and felt a small, grateful smile spread across my lips as the light started growing wider the closer I came to it. I was almost starting to relax as I began reaching it...

But just as I was about to reach it,

Just as I was about to jump through it with open arms and a cry of joy....

A pair of pale, icy hands reached from behind me and grasped me in a death grip.

Pulling me back.
