Reminder that this is in the past, so Moon will be referred to by he/him pronouns. Also, be ready to get protective of Moon in this oneshot.

It had been a dark night. A dark, moonless night. It was around 1 AM. Moon could not tell you for the life of him why he was awake. It was just one of those nights for the young boy. Nobody else was awake.

Finally, Moon sighs. He needed something to drink. He puts his slippers on and begins to walk outside his bedroom. Before he leaves, he looks back into the bedroom. Sun was laying on his bed, facing away from him. Moon blinks and quietly closes the door to their bedroom.

Moon begins to walk downstairs. He really couldn't sleep. Hopefully drinking something would help Moon sleep. He had gone two whole days without sleep, which all of his siblings were concerned about. Lunar and Eclipse often had to give him high doses of melatonin to even get him to take a thirty-minute nap.

Moon arrives at the bottom of the stairs and begins to walk into the kitchen. He climbs on the counter to reach the cups and jumps down once he had grabbed one. He began to fill the cup with water when the front door opened. Moon jumps and almost drops the cup.

Their "parents" were home.

Moon was screwed.

Moon didn't have time to run out of the kitchen before Mr. and Mrs. Netoll (Yes, that is what Moon calls them) entered the kitchen. Mrs. Netoll's eyes seemed to light up at the sight of the son she considered to be the least of a failure. This made... Moon nervous and guilty. Unlike the rest of his siblings, Moon was aware that while their parents hate all of them, Moon was the favorite.

"Moon, my little boy!" Mrs. Netoll says cheerfully. She was slurring her words and Moon immediately knew that she was drunk. Based on how Mr. Netoll was acting, Moon figured that he was as well. "How are you, Sweetie?"

"...Fine," Moon replies after a moment of silence. As much as he hated his "parents", they were always the kindest when they were drunk. "How was work?"

"Good," Mr. Netoll replies. "Why aren't you asleep, buddy?"

"Couldn't sleep," Moon replies. "Eclipse and Lunar tried their best. I just couldn't sleep."

"That's good to know," Mrs. Netoll remarks. Moon shakes as she pulls him close, as if to give him a hug. He hated when she did this. He hated her most of all.

Why couldn't he, Lunar, Sun, and Eclipse have good parents? Parents that genuinely cared about them, not just when they were drunk.

Moon sighs and places his cup on the counter. "May I bring you to your bed?"

"Sure, honey," Mrs. Netoll says. Moon grabs their hands and begins to lead them to their room. This wasn't the first time he had done this. This was at least the 72nd time he'd done this. And Moon had been counting.

When the three entered Mr. and Mrs. Netoll's bedroom, Moon brought them to the side of their sides of the bed.
Once they had climbed into their bed, Moon stood at the foot of the bed.

"Is there anything else you need?" He asks.

"No, Moon. Thank you," Mr. Netoll says. "We love you."

"Love you," Mrs. Netoll echoes.

Moon's breathing began to speed up. He quickly walked out of the room, closing his door on the way out. Once the door was closed, Moon ran to his little hiding spot under the stairs. This room was small, but it was spacious enough that he wasn't feeling cramped or claustrophobic. This little room was where he stayed when he needed to ground himself. Despite not having very many emotions, there were times when it got bad. This was one of those times.

Moon sat inside the small room, curled up. Tears were spilling from his eyes, falling down his face. Moon felt like he was being toyed with. How could they say that after all they had done? To him, to Lunar, to Eclipse, to Sun? Why did it have to be them?

There was nothing that broke Moon than when Mr. and Mrs. Netoll told him that they loved him. It was a lie, nothing more. Yet whenever they were drunk, they told Moon and only Moon that they loved him. Why did it have be him? Frankly, Moon wouldn't have cared as much if it wasn't just him that they told those lies to. At least he would be able to talk about it. But no, it was only to him.

And Moon hated himself for it.

He didn't understand what he did to make them love him more than his siblings. In Moon's eyes, he was a freak. An emotionless freak. So how could they look at him after years of abuse and just tell him that they loved him? And why him? He would never stop asking that question. Surely his siblings were better than him, right?

Eclipse was a strong boy. He had protected his siblings as best he could from the evil that plagued the world.

Lunar was a hard-working kid. Even after all if the trouble he has been given by his peers, he was still determined to do the best he could to teach him and Sun about the world.

Okay, maybe Moon was biased, but he and Sun spent the most time together.  Moon saw Sun as a very independent individual. Sun often put his own wants and needs to the side so that he could help take care of and show Moon the way.

All of them had no problem showing emotions. So why was it him? Why was he the one that they loved? He barely deserved the love he received from his siblings, so why did his "parents" love him?

But every time they were drunk, Mr. and Mrs. Netoll would find Moon and tell him such. That they loved him. And every time, he dreaded it.

Please don't say you love me.

He hated hearing the words. They weren't even telling him the truth! All those words were were lies! He wanted it to stop! He wanted them to stop!

Moon felt his breathing growing heavier. Maybe they knew how it affected him. Maybe they did it to remind Moon that he was nothing but a mistake in their eyes. But that also wasn't a secret, so Moon didn't see why hiding it and covering it up was necessary.

Maybe, just maybe, they just wanted to see him at his weakest. Maybe they wanted to pull him apart from his siblings, the only people he called family.

Moon eventually calmed himself down enough that he could walk back to his room. He walked up the stairs and into the room that he and Sun shared. He looks at his brother. Sun was now facing the doorway, though Moon could tell that he was still asleep. Moon smiles slightly as he walks over to his bed and lays down. After about another fifteen minutes, he was able to fall asleep, his thoughts disappearing from his head as he was finally able to find peace and quiet.

Just saying, I love Moon, but he is so easy to make angst for. He and Lunar are the easiest to make angst for. They don't deserve it though. Poor Moon.

The Netoll "parents" are the worst. Like, I vote we all stab them and make them suffer for what they've done. That's why Eclipse, Lunar, Sun, and Moon are now Celestials.

I hope you guys enjoyed this oneshot. Have a great day/night!
