The White Widow

Chapter 2

Yelena instantly recognised the voice. Kate. How could she ever forget her. Her voice briefly filled Yelena with the comfort and relief she was so used to feeling when hearing her voice, but it was just that, a fleeting moment of nostalgia. As soon as it came and went, Yelena was left with an overwhelming sense of dread.

"Yelena," Her voice cracked. "I finally found you."

There was a long pause where Kate waited for a response, and Yelena waited for Kate to either keep talking or left. Yelena was frozen. She couldn't bring herself to face Kate after all she had done.

"Yelena, please,"

Kate was nearly begging now, but Yelena remained facing away from her. She couldn't face the expected look of betrayal and anger. After all, Yelena did abandon her. Abandoned everything they had and didn't look back. It had to be that way. Why couldn't Kate understand that. The Red Room would stop at nothing to get Yelena back, so for everyone's safety. Yelena left.

"Look at me!" Kate screeched.

Yelena flinched. Had she been facing Kate, she would've surely seen the look shock on her face. Kate was never one to yell. She was always so well tempered and in control of herself. It was one of the many things Yelena admired about Kate. But then again, a lot changes in two years.

"Do you even know now selfish you are!?"

Kate was becoming more undone by the second, but she hadn't gotten any closer to Yelena. It was surprising that she hadn't rounded the bench to force Yelena to finally face her. Maybe she couldn't bear to look Yelena in the eyes either.

On the rare nights, where Yelena dreamt instead of enduring another nightmare. The dream was of this day. The day Kate found her. The day she could finally see her again. She could look at her, talk to her, and touch her. But this isn't how it went, this was more like her nightmares. Yelena had left so much havoc in her wake that she never really prepared herself for Kate's reaction or Natalia's for that matter.

Yelena truly thought she would never see them again.

"Why won't you look at me?!" Kate was uncontrollable now, finally letting out every emotion Yelena was responsible for. "Do you have any idea what it's been like since you left? What your leaving did to me?! I needed you! I loved you, Yelena! And you abandoned me!"

A single tear slid down Yelena's face before it was roughly swatted away. With all her might, Yelena stood up, and without batting an eye, she began walking home. Surprisingly, Kate let her. She fully expected Kate to grab her wrist and yank her back to continue her verbal assault, but she didn't.

Yelena had only taken a few steps when it became apparent that Kate was simply following her. Despite all that has changed, Kate was still as stubborn as she remembered. The walk took an hour and the entirety of it was spent in an uncomfortable silence. On several occasions, Kate almost would speak, getting as far as opening her mouth, but she always closed it and said nothing. Yelena took a brief glance at her watch. It was 10 am.

As quickly as she could, Yelena tried to slip inside and close the front door, but Kate managed to cram her foot in the doorway, preventing it from closing. Yelena didn't bother to fight and quickly gave up. Kate let herself in before Yelena had a chance to change her mind. Kate wasted no time in continuing her verbal beat down from earlier.

"Yelena, it's been 2 fucking years. What the fuck happened? I thought we were in a good place. I thought you loved me." Venom oozed from Kate's mouth.

It was true. They had been in a good place, but Yelena was the problem. Yelena had been the happiest she'd ever been in her life. That was until her past came back to haunt her. She had been naive and had let her guard down. Yelena had chosen Kate, and she deeply wanted to be with her, but she couldn't. Not without endangering Kate's life.
