THE HOOD OF THE STARTLING BLUE CAR COLSON had rented from the showroom was pulled down as the equally cool and warm air washed through my form, threading through my hair, as I held onto my dark scarf over my head against the wind's wrath. Connor was strapped in the back seat, a wide smile on his face as his daddy raced the car through the streets of New York.
I had no sense of direction at present. I didn't know where we were, only that Colson was taking us to The Luna Park in Coney Island. Our suitcases were already snug in his private jet, waiting for us as we ventured farther from whatever plans Colson had initially woken up this morning with.
His dark oversized hoodie was pulled over his head, not budging against the strength of the wind. On any other man, it would look casual to the point of laziness, but Machine Gun Kelly pulled off an oversized hoodie look as though it was office attire. With his sculpted facial features being framed by the hood on his head, a glint in the silver ring of his nose piercing, his light blue eyes trapping sun glares inside, he looked like one of those Greek sculptures unearthed from the ground to be put on display in The Louvre.
The sound system blared The Killers' Mr Brightside in an ambience that thrummed along with every pulse of mine, bouncing off of the interior of the expensive car while the outside atmosphere remained unbothered with the music. There was something about the acoustics of the car, I had heard the employee at the showroom say, it trapped the sound system inside in a way that audio didn't translate heavily outside, even when the windows or the car hood was down.
"I'm coming out of my cage and I've been doing just fine,
gotta, gotta be down because I want it all.
It started out with a kiss how did it end up like this?
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss."
The lyrics were embedded in the crevices of my memory. As an old song, it had been everything-a relic of the past in the way that most music to me was.
Connor knew the song, and though he was much too young to understand the lyrics, he knew them like a verse spoken frequently. Back in The Bronx, we had listened to The Killers often times during our breakfast sessions.
I kept my gaze ahead, making it frequently venture over to my son in the backseat as we soared past cars and scapes on the streets on this sunning afternoon.
"Now I'm falling asleep,
and she's taking a cab
while he's having a smoke,
and she's taking a drag.
Now their going to bed
and my stomach is sick,
and it's all in my head."
Lip syncing the lyrics, I instinctively looked at Colson, at the wheel beside me. His gaze was fixed ahead on the road, but when he felt me looking, his blue eyes instantly met mine. There was something hard in them, tainted with a desperation and determination that was shaking to decipher. He could say so much through his eyes, but his message was never clear. I don't think I'll ever be able to understand him. When he used his words, I fought so hard to make myself believe him, and when I listened to his eyes, they never betrayed what I wanted to know clearly. It was effort. Everything was effort with him. I felt like I could spend myself raw and there will still be something left that I wouldn't be able to decipher.
"Jealousy turning saints into the sea,
swimming through sick lullabies,
choking on your alibis.
But it's just the price I pay,
destiny is calling me.
Open up my eagle eyes
cause I'm Mr Brightside."
