I was moving some junk into a pile when I heard the familiar sound of metallic wings. "Hey Devin, I'm back!" I dropped the boulder into the pile and heard him land next to me.

I grabbed an empty can to fiddle with. "Oh hey N how was your hunt?" I sat down and faced him.

He seemed a little hesitant before saying. "Uh Devin." he paused and knew I said something wrong.

"Yeah N?" I asked running through the conversation in my head trying to see where I fucked up.

He looked over at me looking a little guilty. "I don't do that anymore." I was confused for a second before realizing what he meant. He doesn't hunt anymore apparently while hunting he found a drone who convinced him to stop.

"Oh yeah... how was your... day?" I asked him, having no idea where to go from there. I realized that the metal can I was holding had become a crushed piece of scrap.

"Pretty good, how about you?" I wasn't exactly sure how to respond to that, it had been A while since I was asked anything, and N normally just talks at me until he has to go do something, which I'm quite happy with.

"It's been good, I haven't had anything too big or heavy to carry without cutting." I genuinely meant it, my work has been relatively easy recently.

"I meant something other than work." I didn't even know how to respond to that, I don't think I've ever talked about anything other than my work.

"Oh uh, I've really just been working." I didn't know what he expected me to say or wanted me to say so I just told him the truth. I saw his demeanor change and I got a little worried.

"Serial Designation D, how long have you been working for?" That definitely wasn't what I expected him to say. I didn't really get why he wanted to know. He's only called me by my designation twice, the first time before I told him my name and the second after he found me in a hole I was trying to get out of. He's worried and I'm scared of what he's gonna do.

"Uh, not too long I promise." I decided to go with the safe answer but that clearly wasn't the right one.

"How long." He looked... Disappointed? I'm not sure why he would be but I had a feeling I shouldn't tell him the truth here. At Least if I don't want to get yelled at.

"I just started," I lied, my voice barely audible. N looked a little mad and gestured to the pile of stuff I had moved just before he got here.

"Tell me the truth, Devin," he demanded, his tone reminded me of a disappointed parent.

"Since you left," I confessed, my shoulders slumping in defeat. I gave up trying to lie and just accepted whatever fate N had decided for me.

"Oh, so like two days?" he asked, his expression almost showing a hint of relief. I wasn't really sure why.

"Since the last time you left," I clarified.

"Oh, that was... a week ago." The weight of his words settled over him.

"Devin, please tell me you haven't been working for a week straight," N begged, I could feel his concern in my servos.

"I took a nap," I offered weakly, attempting to downplay his worry.

"Spending an hour trapped under rubble does not constitute a nap," he retorted, his words piercing through my feeble attempt at justification.

"It was more like a day..." I admitted, remembering how much I disliked being underground, especially under loose rocks hoping to crush me.

"You spent a day trapped under rubble," N affirmed, his tone softened by a tinge of empathy.

"..." I had no response and was worried if I said anything the lecture I'd get would double in length.

"That's it, we're going out. I'm gonna introduce you to Uzi!" N's sudden enthusiasm made me a bit more relaxed.

"Ok, sounds fun. Let's go!" I responded, hoping that he'd forget the whole working for a week straight thing or the trapped under rubble thing.

"After..." N's hesitation made me a bit worried again.

"After what, N?" I asked terrified of his response.

"After you get some sleep," he declared, I sighed knowing that there was no way of getting out of this.

"You're not gonna let me go unless I sleep, right?" I asked just to make sure there was no other way.

"Correct." His confirmation had no room for argument.

"Fine... but you better fly me to the pod while I sleep!" I demanded, really hoping he'd wake me up when we got there and I'd only have to sleep for the 2 hour flight to his pod.

"Totally! Now power off, and I'll talk to you later!" N's arms wrapped around me, picking me up and adjusting me in his arms for the flight.

"Fine... goodnight, N." The words slipped from my voice box as I started to power down.

"Goodnight, Devin." N bid me goodnight as all the energy in my body receded back to my core.

Notes:

moral of the story N finds Devin working and talks with him before forcing him to take a nap and then flying him back to N's Pod.

Devin is a deconstruction drone, a drone built to take wastelands like Copper 9 and break everything into a blank slate. Ex. he destroys buildings and makes massive dumps(garbage piles buried underground).
