N POV

I was sitting in the pod playing with the buttons. I've done pretty well recently. Still no compliments like V got but I wasn't insulted when we got back. J never gave me compliments but that was because I didn't deserve them. V only got them after doing something exceptional so someone like me never deserved to receive any. But now that I thought about it I hadn't seen J for a while. She was apparently on a 'Mission' but I didn't know the specifics. I didn't deserve to. But the sun was getting pretty close to rising. She never spent more than a night away from the spire. Me and V did it sparingly when we accidentally got caught up with something and couldn't get back without being hit by the sun. J was an effective hunter though so there's no way she'd be caught off guard least of all by something like the sun.

Something must have gone wrong. I jumped out the pod then let my wings extend. Then I flew up and out of the spire. I knew she went somewhere south but I didn't know where specifically so it'd take a while to find her. I flew for what felt like hours, But it was most likely just one. Then My entire body burned like a raging fire. I tumbled into the snowy floor before I crawled into a house. I hated the sun, in a single second my entire body would burn and I'd lose about a drone's worth of oil. "Oh Well." no point in being angry about it. I looked around, finding a sturdy enough looking pillar to rest my tail on before hanging upside down. Then I decided it would be best to sleep until the sun went down.

I was awoken by a notification. It rang through my body like a bell. Making my fingertips and toes shake. I barely got a chance to read the notification. It went away almost the second I hit the floor. Something about Leader? I wasn't too sure but it did give me a location. I started flying towards it, getting a bad feeling. Something was wrong. I started speeding towards the location. A large apartment building came into view. I checked the location, finding it to be somewhere on the 5th floor. I crashed through a conveniently large window. I found myself in a rather ordinary room. I walked towards the location, opening doors and closing them behind me. Then there was one door left and my entire body shook.

As I stood behind the door I heard the noises of brutal and messy FEASTING. The kinds of noises I'd only hear if V was starved and feeling particularly sadistic. Then as I approached the door I smelled it. J, but it was somehow more. It smelled condensed as if J was crushed into a perfume. Then the sounds stopped, interrupted by something worse. The noise of hurling, putrid and disturbing. Like someone puking out their own stomach. I grabbed the handle of the door trying my hardest to not run away like a coward but instead confront whatever was on the other side of the door. I swung the door open... I didn't have the words. J's body or atleast what was left of it was sprawled all over the room. Barely scrap metal. The pieces were bent and torn as if they were placed into a blender and then spread around the room. Making a grotesque art piece. There was oil everywhere, black and thick. I could see the faint glowing yellow of J's core. It was coming from several places. The thing in the middle of the room looked over to me. The scattered pieces of J's core all dimmed as if following its commands. Its visor was covered in a triangular purple shape. I almost cried when I saw its tags. Worker Drone, Cannibal, @B$0LUT3 $0LV3R, and the worst of all. Squad Leader.

("Company Policy 23-5 Disassembly Drones' Leader Status. In a Situation in which one of you two feel im doing an unsatisfied job, and you manage to not only successfully kill me but also completely eradicate me. You are automatically elected as the new squad leader." J looked towards me and Glared. "Does this change anything squad?" I shivered a bit. It was a challenge. "Nope you're doing great J!")

The new squad leader simply sat there staring at me. I couldn't read its expression but I felt like it was asking me. Are you proud of my work? It was repulsive, its fleshy and almost buglike wings twitched sporadically. On the end of its tail was a small bug-like face. It had sharp teeth and hundreds of eyes. I felt a small pain in the soles of my feet and I looked down to see J's oil climbing up my leg. I jumped away, it was trying to eat me. To find fuel to repair itself. But there isn't anything left of J. Everything that was J. It was gone and the THING in front of me was the cause. I noticed J's oil climbing up it. It was also being eaten by the remnants of J. But it didn't even look inconvenienced. Then it moved, I held up my wings to guard myself but a strike never came. Then the sounds of feasting continued. I tore my wings away to see it hunched over the largest remaining piece of J. It was tearing the metal apart with its jaws and consuming the metal that might have once been J's chassis. Disassembly drones didn't eat their victims; we only drank their oil. But whatever this was. It wasn't satisfied with just J's oil. It needed more and got it by eating J.

Then something changed. I saw steam leaving its body, the wings slowly cracked and melted away. Leaving a worker with a strangely fleshy tail. "O-oh god. N-no I did it again." The worker started freaking out looking at the remnants of my family that coated the walls. Then it looked towards me, its eyes hollowed then it looked downwards. Shame. The thing that killed J dared to look ashamed. "D-did you know her?" It sounded disappointed and vulnerable and in any other situation I would have ran and hugged it. Any Other situation. "Yes I did."

"I'm sorry, I can't really... Did you like her?" The drone looked almost crushed. The thing that was feasting on my family. "No but she was family." I glared at her. It wasn't something I was good at but I think I still got the point across. We just stood there for a while. Neither of us could find any words to say. Then The building shook. Both me and whatever our new squad leader was shook. Then I looked behind me seeing V. If I didn't know better I'd say she was afraid. Then when she got inside and took a single look at our new squad leader, her face shifted several times. Too fast for me to keep up with but then it ended with an almost mournful look. Then she bowed. She bowed towards the thing that killed J! "I welcome our new squad leader. It is nice to meet you."

"What!" Both me and the thing yelled, then I glared at it and it looked away. "V That thing killed J!" V looked over to me. Then in a flash her fist was on my visor. I flew back into the wall, my visor crushed and cracked. "Please excuse me for a moment." V gave the thing a small smile, the kind that had no joy or pleasure. A smile that only conveyed a muted respect or kindness. Then V walked up to leaning down before grabbing the front of my jacket and throwing me through the wall. Then she did it again and again. Until we were out of hearing distance. "Listen. I'm not happy about this either, but unless you think you can beat that thing in a fight. That's our new  squad leader." V looked desperate. "How do you know we can't?" I didn't want to be bossed around by the thing that killed J.

"Because even if we both tried our very hardest to kill it. It would destroy us both. Think about it like this, could you beat J in a one on one fight?" V's face was centimeters away from mine, I would have blushed if she wasn't yelling at me. "N-no." V then turned away afraid. Checking to see if it was listening in "Neither could I. But that thing not only beat J in a fight it also destroyed her core." V got up grabbing the front of my jacket again. "Lets just work with it for now alright?" I wanted to believe her. This is the longest conversation we'd ever had, but it killed J. She was family. Then V looked back to me, clearly my face showed my thoughts because she then responded. "Or do you have to go flying through a few more walls before getting the point?" She gave me a genuine smile, the kind she made towards prey. I felt like I was completely under her control, and that if I disagreed with her I'd end up with head trauma till I agreed with her or couldn't disagree with anything.

"Fine." I reluctantly agreed.
