Morgan
The following day, Hank took me to the town clinic. Since I hadn't figured out my medical insurance and didn't have a doctor, I needed an STD panel run. I wanted to find out if Rodney left me a gift that keeps giving.
I entered the office, got some forms, and filled them out, sitting in a chair. Hank sat out in the truck and waited for me to finish. That was a plus. It's bad enough I had to get an STD panel done. I didn't want Hank to think low of me.
A nurse called my name. I handed her the clipboard of forms and followed her to an exam room. She gave me a paper top and a sheet. I disrobed and covered myself before climbing onto the table.
The doctor knocked before entering. He closed the door and asked me questions. I answered the best I could. Then, he examined me and drew blood.
"Everything looks good," the doctor said after examining me. "When was the last time you were sexually active with your husband?"
I blew air past my lips. "It's been months. But my ex-husband didn't like protection. He said it didn't feel normal."
"Were you trying to get pregnant?"
My eyes bulged. "Please tell me I'm not pregnant."
"Relax, Morgan. We ran a pregnancy test. It was negative. I'm trying to figure out a timeline for your sexual history."
I blew air past my lips in relief. "Oh, thank God. I couldn't imagine bringing a baby into this mess of my life."
"We should have your STD results in a few days. But we can rule out most of them with your examination."
I released a deep breath.
"I'll leave you to get dressed." The doctor patted my leg before leaving the room to give me privacy.
I got dressed, left the room, paid my bill, and walked out of the clinic. I turned right and headed to the law office to speak to Maury. I sat in his office after explaining what I needed.
"I'll expedite your divorce, but your ex is contesting it," Maury said.
"That toad cheated on me! Why the hell would he contest it?"
Maury cocked his head. "Did you sign a prenup with your ex-husband?"
"I don't even know what that is. Rodney dealt with all the legal paperwork during our marriage."
"A prenup prevents the spouse from getting half of the assets obtained during the marriage. Your ex had you sign one with one provision. You wouldn't get anything unless one of you cheated. Then the prenup becomes null and void."
I stared at Maury in disbelief.
"Since you filed divorce, claiming infidelity, it nulls then prenup. Since you acquire assets during the marriage, you're entitled to half."
"I don't understand." Those words triggered what Rodney kept saying to me.
You don't understand, Morgan.
I can't take time off, Morgan.
The boss didn't approve my time off.
We don't have the money to splurge on things.
"What assets?" I asked Maury.
Maury read through the papers. "You and your ex have property like a house, cars, and furniture. There's a bank account with over a half million in it. A trust fund with five million in it. That doesn't include stocks in your ex-husband's company."
