It's good to make the Toad squirm

After the yard sale, Hank helped me store the remaining items in the barn behind the house until the next sale. It was better than throwing it away. People could make new memories from Momma's memories.

I also met with Maury to discuss the divorce. Hank drove me to town and joined me this time instead of waiting in the truck. Why hide our relationship? My marriage to Rodney was over.

We sat across from Maury while Maury read through some documents.

"So, Mr. Ellis is asking to finalize the divorce if you agree to forgo any assets. He'll even agree there's no chance of reconciliation between you and him. It would be the fastest divorce in history," Maury said.

"I plan to agree to the toad's requests. But I want to make him squirm a bit. I deserve a little retribution for what he did," I said.

"When would you like to finalize the divorce, Morgan?"

"Wait four days. Make the toad sweat."

"You're the client." Maury nodded.

"Thanks, Maury."

"Morgan, I'm sorry you had to endure this situation. No one deserves to have their heart broken twice."

"I learned a home is always waiting for you when you don't expect it." I looked at Hank and smiled.

Hank returned my smile.

"One day, I'll find my home," Maury said.

"You never know."

We stood up and shook Maury's hands before leaving.

Once we were outside, Hank leaned into me. "Darlin, I don't think you need to worry about Maury making eyes at you."

"Why?"

"You're not Maury's type." Hank walked away, leaving me standing there in shock.

Did Hank say what I think he said?

After dropping that little nugget on Morgan, I strolled away.

Morgan ran to catch up to me. "Wait. Are you saying Maury is gay?"

I stopped and turned to Morgan. "I'm not saying it. I'm telling it."

Morgan's mouth cracked as her brows knitted in confusion. "Huh?"

"Maury's always been a little light in the loafers, but no one says anything."

"How did I not know this? I've met gay people when I lived in Atlanta."

"Some people are afraid others will judge them. Maury doesn't want to lose business if people don't accept his sexuality. But he's a damn good attorney."

"Out of curiosity, what does your family say about this?"

"My family don't care. They're not from the Stone Age, Darlin."

"We could set Maury up with someone as a thank you."

"What?"

"We could find a nice young man and invite them to dinner."

"Darlin, we aren't a dating service."

"I'm sure there's good looking guys that would date Maury."

"No, Darlin." I grabbed Morgan's hand and tugged her behind me while she thought of ways to set Maury up.

I waited in my truck and shielded my face when I spotted Hank and Mary outside of the law office. Once they walked away and left, I got out of my truck and strolled to the entry door. I wiped my hands on my jeans and gave myself a pep talk. You can do this, Shep. Go in and talk to the man.
