I carefully moved the chairs that had barricaded the door, then slowly cracked it open. The hallway was filled with zombies banging their heads and clawing at the doors. I slid a speaker into the corridor as silently as possible positioning it precisely inside the room where we locked ourselves in previously. There was a significant gap between the speaker and our hiding spot. I gently closed the door to avoid drawing their attention. I nodded at Owen and he pressed the play button. The booming music erupted through the silent corridor.

The creatures heads snapped towards the source of the music, and they started approaching from various directions. Time was running out; the speaker wouldn't last long. When the zombies ceased approaching, we made a dash to the other end of the classroom. We carefully opened the door, stepped outside discreetly, and sprinted towards the stairs. The music abruptly stopped, but we were thankful it had served its purpose.

Reaching the ground floor, we rushed toward the entrance, only to find that a few zombies are remained. They spotted us. Panic set in as we turned and fled in the opposite direction. My eyes landed on the gym room. I sprinted toward the gym doors and attempted to open them, but they were locked. I pounded on the door in desperation.

"Is anyone inside? Please open the door, please!" I begged and continued banging on the door, not knowing if anyone was within.

Desperation filled me as I scanned the surroundings. There was nowhere else to hide, and the zombies were closing in. This couldn't be how it all ended.

As if my pleas had been heard, the gym door unlocked. A strong grip pulled us inside. It was too late to close the door completely, as two zombies blocked the entrance. Jake and the guy who had pulled us in, were fighting the zombies. Both delivered a kick at the same time and a zombie went back flying.

While the two held off the other one, we did our best to close the door. During this chaos, one of the zombies and I locked eyes for a brief moment. It suddenly withdrew, allowing the boys to close the door. I wondered why the zombie had backed off after making eye contact, but I dismissed it as I thought I was just imagining it.

"Ethan, man! How've you been? When did you even get here? And you didn't call me?" Jake bombarded the guy with questions.

Ethan? That name sounded very familiar to me and he also looked somewhat familiar. But I never met him before. I would remember it when I meet a hot guy.

"I arrived three days ago and called you, but you never answered," Ethan replied, narrowing his eyes at Jake.

"Oh, that was you? I missed the call, and when I checked, it was an unknown number, so I didn't bother to call back. How was I supposed to know it was you with a new phone number?" Jake shrugged.

"I gave you my new number before I moved, but I guess you didn't save it." Ethan said, glaring at Jake. Jake grinned sheepishly, and Ethan chuckled.

"Why didn't you open the door sooner?" Carol asked angrily.

"I thought it was a zombie." Ethan replied.

"Zombies don't go around knocking on doors. They don't even know how to walk for god's sake." Carol countered.

"I didn't want to take any chances. They may not know how to walk, but they sure as hell know how to kill" Ethan added.

"We could've died." I stated trying to be calm and collected.

Ethan seemed to want to say something in response, but he abruptly stopped. He was staring at me now. I raised an eyebrow and he looked away, clearing his throat.

"But you didn't." he finally replied.

I shook my head and walked over to Mia and Owen, trying to suppress my frustration.

Mia, and Owen watched our exchange with amusement, while Carol continued to glare at Ethan and Jake was grinning. Idiot.

"So, any ideas on what we should do now?" Owen asked casually, trying to ease the tension.

"Why don't we escape from the backside of the school?" Mia suggested, catching our attention. Why didn't we think of it?

"Great idea! That door leads to the school's backyard," Owen said, pointing to a nearby door.

"But how do we go from there? We don't have a vehicle. They're all in the parking lot, and the front of the building will likely be filled with zombies." I pointed out.

"We can use my Jeep; it's in the back." Ethan suggested.

"Why was it parked there? Were you trying to skip class or something?" Carol asked sarcastically.

Ethan gasped, "You're a genius, girl. How did you know?"

It was common for students to skip school when their first class was gym. How did they manage it?

"First of all, my name is Carol, and..." I grabbed Carol's arm and pulled her away before the argument could start again.

"So, shall we get moving now?" Ethan asked.

We all nodded, determined that this time, our escape would be a success.
