It was just a normal, routine day like every other day. That's what everyone thought including Jade Miller. But in the blink of an eye, everything turned upside down by the rapid spread of a highly contagious virus.
Hope seems lost as no one knows h...
The buzzing sound of my alarm woke me up with a jolt. I winced due to the ache in my neck which must have been a result of a very unladylike sleeping position.I internally debated, whether to go back to sleep or get ready for school. I glanced at the clock and realise that it's already 6 and I have exactly 45 minutes more in my hand until the bus arrives.
I slowly get out of my bed and slither into the bathroom. I take a look at the mirror and the first thing I notice are, the bags under my eyes which I wish were as expensive as Gucci which were formed as a result of me, staying up late at night and completing my assignments.I strongly believe what Rory Gilmore said, "Who cares if I'm pretty if I fail my finals." Since I'm in my senior year, I have to work extra hard so that I can get into a good university.
After completing my morning routine, I put on my outfit for the day.

I slid open the windows and the chilly November air blows across my body. I quickly close the window and thank my outfit for the warmth it provides. I made my way downstairs and looked around for any sign of my parents. They weren't home yet.
I wasn't surprised or worried; I had gotten used to it. My mom is a doctor, and my dad is a scientist. They often arrived late from work, and sometimes, they didn't come home at all. These past few weeks, they rarely came home. I couldn't even remember the last time I had a meal with them. I'm an only child, which is overwhelming, as I'm the only hope they have.
I shrugged away the thoughts and grabbed some eggs and bread. I prepared a simple bread-omelette and took a seat at the dining table.
As I sat at the dining table, sipping on my orange juice and nibbling my bread-omelette, the TV continued to blare in the background. The news anchor was now discussing the mysterious illness spreading in a distant city. I couldn't help but find the whole thing amusing. I turned the volume up. She was now telling that people are turning into zombies and soon the world is gonna come to an end.
I chuckled to myself, "Zombie apocalypse? Really? They'll report anything these days to boost their ratings." I rolled my eyes, thinking it was just another sensationalized news story and continued eating.
After finishing my breakfast, I quickly grab my backpack and head out. I have locked the front door and made sure I checked everything.
"May your day be as amazing as me!"
I turned around with a grin to the voice that belonged to my best friend, Carol Anderson. Carol and I were inseparable, or at least that's what people had been saying since we were kids. We first met in fourth grade when I transferred here, and we clicked instantly. We had been the best of friends since then.
"Can't be sure enough." I replied back, to which she grinned at me.
"You're parents home yet?" She asked.
"Nope.", I reply with a sad smile.
"What about yours?" I ask.
"Nope.", she replies, returning the same sad smile.
Both of her parents were geneticists. My parents and the Andersons often worked together in the laboratories which meant her parents were also rarely home, so we spent time with each other every single day
We chatted for a few minutes and then the bus arrived. We were seated in our regular seats and started discussing about a few things about our classes. I look out through the window while Carol was answering a phone call. People were walking while wearing puffed up jackets. The weather was rather off this week. It was very cold and chilly. Amidst my thoughts, A man caught my eye. He was running and he looked frightened. He was running as if his life depended on it. Did he see something frightening?Did something happen to someone? Curiosity got the better of me and before I knew, I started to think of various possibilities.
"Our English teacher just updated on our school website that- Jade?"
I didn't notice I zoned out until Carol waved a hand in front of my face.I quickly shrugged my thoughts away," You were telling something?" I asked.
"Yes, as I was telling before, our English teacher just updated..."
I was trying to listen to whatever Carol was telling but, those thoughts were still in the back of my head begging to be answered.
It sent a shiver down my spine, and I couldn't help but feel a growing unease. The sight of the running man, the unusual weather, and the eerie news report all hung in the back of my mind, creating an unsettling atmosphere that seemed to foretell something ominous. _______________________
