Sometime during 2015...Mexico City is a metropolis of captivating contrasts, where historic streets blend seamlessly with contemporary boulevards, and a rich cultural legacy harmonizes with a dynamic present. Its pulse echoes the melodies of mariachi bands and the lively ambiance of street food stalls. At the same time, the Mexican sun bathes the facades of ancient Aztec ruins and modern skyscrapers alike, casting a warm glow upon the architectural diversity that defines the city.
It's also the perfect place, at least for Nicky Smith, to hide in plain sight! Nickolas, a young boy from Queens, New York, found the city more peaceful than his own. He was determined to stay in this beautiful city despite his mother's disapproval of his sexual orientation, which he had revealed over a year ago. But it was getting harder not to desire to be around someone who fully accepted him for who he was!
"Nickolas, are you awake, honey?" Miranda called out to his bedroom as she read a letter to herself. "I have to show you something before you go to school." Nicky groaned softly, pulling the pillow over his head to drown out the morning intrusion. He contemplated pretending to be asleep, but he knew she would tell him later, if not now.
"Yes, Mom," Nicky said with an annoyed tone as he came in, backpack on, school uniform on, ready to hear what his mother had lined for him this morning, as she did every morning. He searched the fridge, looking for orange juice. Nicky pondered in his head, wondering why he lived here despite how much money he's made. Instead, Nicky wanted to live with his dad. He and his mother didn't live in a bad house or neighborhood! It was a luxurious house. And the school Nicky attended was within the neighborhood. Maybe not as big as the old house his family lived in. But they were comfortable, unlike how it used to be. But it was who he had to share the house with. That was the issue!
"I found this church group for young kids, and I think it will help you." Oh, not again... And this is why he dreaded waking up to her every morning. Miranda's attempts to "fix him" were relentless. As if joining a church group would magically transform his life.
"Not going," he adamantly stated, shutting down further discussion.
The woman dressed in her sleepwear sighed, placing her coffee cup down, staring as Nicky, who decided to forget the orange juice, raced out of the kitchen. "Young man, you are going to regret not listening to your mother one day," she called after him, but he was already halfway out the door.
"Bye, ma!" Nicky shouted as he closed the door behind him, not wanting to hear another word of what Miranda had to say to him. Outside, the crisp morning air hit Nicky's face, and he took a deep breath, trying to clear his mind. Nickolas was done trying to have a normal relationship with his mother. After two years, she still hadn't accepted who he was. And her explanation for his "choice" was infuriating.
"I must've let you around the wrong people! I should've looked after you and protected you more!" Nicky felt anger rise when he remembered what she would say if someone brought up his sexuality. She refuses to accept what is right in front of her. Miranda's words resonated in Nicky's mind like a broken record.
That statement was the last actual complete sentence Nicky heard from her before he started to distance himself from the delusional woman. The boy could remember vividly when he came out to his parents. In fact, for a long time, he thought of himself as the reason they split up. Well, until Peter assured him that it was indeed not his fault! That was the reassurance Nicky needed at that fragile age.
Nicky dialed the usual number his dad gave him. He walked towards the school, something he enjoyed doing, knowing that after high school, he wouldn't have the privilege of "being a normal kid," as his dad puts it.
