Mateo

It's almost a blessing that I failed Mrs. Annie's class last year. Now, I get to see him nearly every day! But that's not enough. I want to be even closer to him somehow, some way. I can't explain why; I just... like him.

Today wasn't a big day. It was mostly class setup proceedings and a boring ass test! It's still the first week of school. In an interesting possible twist of fate, Mrs. Annie quickly brushed the subject of her pairing us up for the year. But she hadn't yet made up her mind. If she were to do that, that would be my chance to get closer to him in a way. Still! What about Brook? How would it make her feel if she knew I was sitting here, right now, silently getting excited over the possibility of hanging with—

"Matéo!" Mrs. Annie's thunderous voice snaps me out of my deep thoughts. Her face fills with concern. I must've been lost in my thoughts about him. I haven't stopped thinking about him since yesterday, man!

"Oh. Yes, Mrs.-"

"Class ended a minute ago. Were you daydreaming?" Mrs. Annie snorted, questioning me as I began gathering my belongings. Her inquisitive yet amused expression indicated that she was silently judging me. But she wasn't all that mad at me! I hope. Not like the disappointment she felt announcing to me and my parents that I was to repeat her class. Thank God I didn't have to repeat the entire grade. I struggled to find words adequate to respond, and the thought of my struggle to figure out Nickolas was still on my mind.

"Um, sort of! Sorry about that, Mrs. Annie," I apologize as I rise and sling my backpack over my shoulder.

"Well, since you're still here, I'd like to talk to you about something," Mrs. Annie said, walking up to my desk and handing back the test I completed earlier in the class. "You did fairly well on your test, and it was only meant to gauge your reading level," she said optimistically. "However, it might be a good idea for you to team up with someone for the year and study together."

I glanced at the red 80 on the paper. I've always been content with things as long as they were a B or C. Being an athlete, my focus was primarily on football, not academics. The average was fine with me as long as I excelled in the sport I loved.

"Who should I pair up with?" I inquire.

"I have someone in mind who I believe would be a good match for you," Mrs. Annie replied, looking at me and grinning.

"And who would that be," I asked, worried she might pair me with one of the nerds in class or something.

"Hmmm... stay tuned, Mateo. You might benefit from this pair-up if you put your mind to it," she said, returning to her desk. "Have a good rest of your day, Mr. Garcia."

Who could she be talking about? Who had she thought of to fix the confusion that is me? I think of that and how I would start to get to know Nicky as I walked down the hallway and the stairs, trying to find him.

I'd been discreetly observing and keeping up with where he was for the past year, and I'd kept up with him from a distance, but today, he was nowhere to be seen. Ok, yeah, it's a little creepy. Is this what it's like when girls and dudes fawn over me like I hear through the rumors around school?

Usually, he'd be out in the parking lot, but the crowd of kids searching for their parents and the line of cars made it a pain to spot him.
