Angel
"Ok, guys," Mr. Shoop announced as everyone raced around the main theater to get whatever was needed for our upcoming event. "It's almost time for the school Halloween festival! We've put much effort into our production these past few weeks! So let's make today equally as productive!" The room filled with a short wave of cheers. Los Robles' 10th annual Halloween celebration is just around the corner, only five days away.
It's been a fucking rollercoaster of a year so far for all of my friends. And we aren't done with the first semester.
For one, I've been through pure hell. Home life is pretty hard. But I feel one person is the root of all of my problems regarding starlight. Andrés and I have been in a never-ending series of arguments since he joined the program. And for some inexplicable reason, he seems to enjoy my discomfort, showing up every week to make me seethe with irritation!
Late as always, who the hell does he think he is just waltzing in and taking over the program? Ok... I'm being a little bit too sensitive about this. Andrés was only 5 minutes late, and we hadn't even started rehearsals yet. I can't quite understand why I'm so annoyed with him. Everything about him is getting under my skin! The way Andrés seemed to just fit right in with us without even breaking a sweat is the biggest. I remember it took me years in Starlight to perform like I do now!
Andrés' eyes lock in on me as soon as he is done greeting the new friends he met. He smirks slightly as the unease I couldn't contain escapes my body and makes its way onto my face. This boy has a way of getting under my entire ass! I guess it's payback for how I used to do the same things to him before this year.
I roll my eyes and retreat to a corner where Luis, Nicky, and Laura all stand and talk. Luis is busy learning his lines for the upcoming play, Laura is probably doing flyers for the production on her pink-covered MacBook, and Nicky has an armful of sheet music. Antonio is with the music department, rehearsing. Unfortunately, I won't have my best friend to comfort me tonight.
"Hey guys," I breathed out as I approached. They all looked at me weirdly, as if I had entered their conversation at the wrong time.
"What's wrong with you," Nicky asked, looking me up and down with concern. "You sound low-energy." It's probably pretty evident that I'm upset. I've never been good at hiding my feelings. I wear them on my sleeve like a shirt!
"I can tell you," Luis chimed in. I glared at him as he smirked and continued. "He and Andrés have been clashing ever since Andrés joined Starlight." Another thing about Luis is that he's got a big mouth! And he's never wrong when he opens it, which makes it annoying because he tells you nothing but the truth.
"You all know I cannot stand him," I say.
"Oh, we are well aware," Laura smirks at me. Then looks behind me, more than likely looking at Andrés. "You don't think Andrés is more than an irritation, Angel? You two go at it like a married couple!"
"I'm not the one who's always starting it," I mumble, glaring at Andrés as he's laughing it up with a group of theater kids.
"Oh, what a change," Laura mocked. "Last year, you were doing all of the torturing, Angel!" My friends laughed at my karma as I looked at them, deeply irritated.
Shortly, their laughter settled. "Well, maybe this will cheer you up!" Nicky handed me a copy of the music Setlist for the show. Mr. Shoop allowed Lucas and me to direct and get things together for the production in five short days. I gave him a little smile and a brief hug before he left to rehearse with Antonio, heading to the copy machine to an open office area to make changes. As I walk, I can't help but think of how close Andrés was pushing me to my limit.
