Nickolas

"Alright, class! We've reached the end of your first week," Mrs. Annie enthusiastically announces. How are you all doing?"

Responses varied from good to bad, with my choice being "stressful." The transition from middle to high school is a weird one. But I'm learning to adjust. How it's supposed to work here is, technically, I'm still in middle school. Luckily, this school treats students like American schools. Unfortunately, I feel the fucking pressure!

The sentiments regarding Mrs. Annie's question were pretty much the same with every other student, including Mateo, whose unmistakable voice was stuck in my head now. Speaking of him, with Mateo consistently sitting behind me, I could practically hear every word, chuckle, and breath he took. I could hear no one else in this class more clearly than Mateo, and it was getting on my nerves. His breathing, yawning, sniffling, and more were audible; for some reason, I wanted to hear his voice! What the hell is going on with me?

"Class, based on your reading evaluations from the second day, I initially asked a few of you to find a partner for the school year. However, I've changed my heart, and pairing everyone up is great. So, I'd like everyone to stand up and come to the front of the room."

We gathered our belongings and navigated our way through the beanbag chairs. After the noise settled down, she began making the pairings. It wasn't until the 14th pairing that she called my name.

"Nickolas Smith and Jason Martinez," she announced, pointing to a set of bean bags.

Part of me secretly hoped to be paired with Mateo. It felt like destiny was pushing us together. I had to admit, I had a crush on him. But having a crush on someone who will never feel the same way is tough, especially when they're part of a power couple with a girlfriend.

But on Tuesday, I couldn't help but think I'd left school too early like I'd missed something important.

"Jason Martinez," she asked again, looking around for the missing kid.

Oh shit, This might be my lucky day!

"Hmm, looks like he's absent today. Well, Mateo, you can partner with Nicky. I did ask you to find him on Tuesday," she explained, with a questionable tone layered under.

Ah, it all made sense now!

Mateo's face held a glimmer of happiness, his lips curving into a slight smile. Yet his demeanor remained the same. "I know, Mrs. Annie. I didn't manage to find him."

He maneuvered through the group of kids, arranging their belongings and retrieving their E-readers. I attempted the same, but his presence drew nearer every moment, making my task more challenging. Eventually, I succeeded.

"Hey, kid," he greeted, grunting as he settled into a bean bag.

I understood the appeal of bean bags, but they were a bit of a struggle to sit in. I always felt like I'd topple backward as soon as I sat down. But once you were in them, they were surprisingly comfortable.

"Hey, Mateo," I replied hushedly, searching my E-reader for what I needed. I couldn't help but smile, knowing he'd be next to me for the rest of the year.

"She sent me to find you on Tuesday, but you vanished," he chuckles. The sound of him shuffling through his bag fills the silence.

"Well, I had other commitments right after, so I couldn't stay long," I explained, suppressing a smile.

"Aw, you didn't want to hang out with Matty, Nickelodeon," he teased playfully, referring to himself in 3rd person

"Oh, I see you've got jokes," I responded, my smile breaking free thanks to his charming presence. "Where did you even get the name Nickelodeon?"
