ADA WAS WAITING in the living room of the foster home, her legs crossed and her eyes scanning over a drawing she was creating. She'd finally managed to find a pencil under the head nannys desk and snuck it out while she wasn't looking. Ada doubted that she would care, but everyone knew not to take risks with her. She could make you or break you.

She hovered over her drawing until she head nanny walked out of her office with Dr. Cullen shortly behind. "Ada, Dr. Cullen has made the courageous decision to adopt you. He'd already done the paperwork and would like to pick you up tomorrow morning."

Ada gaped. She wondered how she looked with her eyes bulging out of her head and her jaw on the floor. But she pulled herself together almost instantly and stood up. She wanted to hug him or do something but it was like her feet were glued to the carpet.

"Thank you," she merely whispered. It was enough.

Ada couldn't sleep that night. Did Dr. Cullen have kids? A wife? If he even had kids, were they her age? She needed the answers but she couldn't possibly stay up in these conditions. But she knew she couldn't get up, lights out was at 9pm and it was 10:51.

She laid on her back and stared up at the bunk above her. She thought about Dr. Cullen again. There was something about him that was different, something strange. Maybe it was his gold eyes? Such an unusual color, even for someone as beautiful as him.

There was just something that made him recognizably attractive, but he was almost 20 years older than her. It was something that made him so much different than everyone else she knew, but she just couldn't place her finger on it.

Ada woke up the next day almost jumping with joy. She was finally getting adopted and was going to have a real family, someone who cared about her. She didn't even know when Dr. Cullen would be arriving but she woke up extra early just in case.

She wore her best shirt and a pair of jeans, making sure that she looked presentable. She'd never seen herself like this before and she definitely had never felt the way she did now.

She felt a newfound confidence linger inside of her, finding that someone did want her, and it just so happened to be a handsome surgeon. She stepped down the staircase for one last time until she went home with Dr. Cullen today, her hands falling along the rails as she stepped carefully down the wooden planks.

It was only then when she realized she'd barely eaten anything yesterday. She'd only had a soggy pancake that tasted like dirt and a mere glass of water. And though her stomach churned, Ada decided it was better off to travel on an empty stomach to eat something unworth her time anyway, so she wandered the halls until she thought Dr. Cullen would arrive.

But when he didn't arrive, Ada started to get nervous. If he wasn't here already, was he even going to come at all? She'd started to pace around the empty living room, occasionally glancing out the windows to the parking lot, but nobody was there.

She sighed and just sat down. Was it even worth it to pack up her things so early in the day? Unreasonable, maybe, but perhaps it would be something to do other than sit here for God knows how long, waiting.

Ada stood up from the couch, walking up the stairs again, hoping to relieve some anticipation. She packed up her things and stuffed them in a small suitcase the head nanny had dropped off for her. The rest of her things were stuffed into a plastic bag.

"You're leaving?" A tinny voice asked. Ada almost jumped out of her shoes at the sudden figure now standing behind her.

"Uh... yeah, I'm leaving today." She didn't bother to turn around, she already knew who it was. It just so happened to be Elise, the meanest girl in the whole home. Pushing people around all day just happened to be her specialty.

"Well, finally," Elise scoffed. "Congrats." Her voice was now more monotone than sarcastic. Ada couldn't determine whether she was trying to be sweet or just make her feel worse.

"I guess so." Ada sighed, closing her now full suitcase and setting it on the bed, its contents almost spilling out of it as it was already filled up way too much.

"At least you won't have to stay here any longer. I'll finally be rid of you." Her laugh was dry, like it hadn't been used in a long time, but it was used almost every day, just not as sincere as it should be.

"Yes, because I'm the least of your problems, Elise."

Elise had been in the home even longer than Ada had, and though the two happened to be arch nemeses, Ada couldn't help but feel bad for the girl. She knew what it was like to be in her shoes after all.

Elise's parents also left her at a young age. Her mother had passed away from lung cancer and her father became a heavy drinker. Through the years, she was eventually adopted by her aunt Clarissa, but passed away shortly after from a heart condition.

Elise had been through it all, and though she still felt sorrowful for the girl, Ada couldn't find it in her heart to forgive Elise for all the tormenting she had paid her in the past.

"Well, when are you leaving?" Elise asked, looking at her bags.

Ada sighed. "Honestly, I'm not sure when he's arriving. Hopefully soon." She continued to pack her bags and act like talking to Elise after all this time was a burden, but if she was being honest, it was nice to have her old best friend back.

"Listen," Elise spoke then, taking a seat on Ada's bunk. "I know we haven't been the best of friends, but it feels like now that you're leaving, I should at least say that I'm sorry."

Ada had never expected Elise to apologize, but now that she was, it was like a thousand weights had been lifted from her shoulders. "For what, though?"

Elise sighed again. "For everything. For not been a good enough friend while we still were friends. I didn't want you to leave and think that I hate you after all this time, so I just wanted to say that."

Her apology was lifting, and though for a long time she despised Elise, Ada was relieved that, finally, it was over.

"Thanks," was all she muttered.

The suitcase snapped shut as the fold closed. There was a lingering silence as Ada picked up her suitcase, and both of the girls stood awkwardly at each other.

"Well, I guess I should go," Elise said, her eyes not leaving the floor once.

Just then a knock came from behind the door. "Ada?" It was Samantha's voice, and Ada realized that Dr. Cullen must have arrived.

Ada pushed the door open and a creak echoed throughout the quiet room. "Mr. Cullen is here to pick you up," Samantha said when the door was all the way open.

Ada didn't say anything as the nanny shut the door once again, the dead silence looming in the air again.

"So, is this my que to leave?" Elise asked with a smile.

"I guess so." The girls laughed along with eachother for a short moment and Ada grabbed her suitcase off of the bed. Not knowing whether to hug Elise or not, she did and it felt good to finally have this pressure off of her shoulders.

Without saying anything, Ada opened and closed the door again and met Dr. Cullen outside where he placed her suitcase in the trunk of his Mercedes. The engine roared to life as the car pulled out of the parking lot, the foster home far behind her.
