I walked down the hallway. The ground felt as if it was coated with honey. It took almost all of my effort to lift each foot off of the concrete floor to move forward. The lights flickered above me, obscuring my vision of what lay ahead in quick flashes.

As I walked further down the hall it seemed to get colder and harder to move. Eventually, the hall opened up into a circular room that was covered in shadows. My breathing became ragged.

I forced myself forward into the darkness.

"....v...ai...la..."

I lurched as I heard the slight whisper pass behind me.

"...what... what do you want with me?" I tried to call to the entity that lived in the shadows.

I twisted quickly as I felt the same whisper drag itself across the corner of my periphery.

I tensed every muscle in my body, clenching my fists.

"LEAVE ME ALONE!" I shut my eyes as I screamed out into the void.

In an instant, the whole room became a soundless hole, almost as if any scream or cry would immediately be drawn into it. An empty effort.

There was a deep cold in front of me, and I shook as I slowly opened my eyes.

It was a man, covered in shadow. His eyes white blank spheres. Slowly a crooked smile started to form.

"No."

Before I could react I was covered in shadow, every inch of me surrounded in the darkness. It was suffocating. I can't breathe. I can't breathe. Please Stop. Please. I felt my vision start to blur. This was it. This is how it would end.

Just before my vision faded to black, the shadow lifted from me. My lungs heaved in desperate gasps of air. I tried to move my hands to grip my chest, but immediately felt a resistance.

I looked down. My arms were strapped down against old rotting leather. My head flung around. This chair. I was back in the chair. I pulled against the restraints as hard as I could, fighting against the pain of forming bruises.

I froze as the shadow entity reappeared in front of me, the same sadistic grin marking his dark features.

There was a faint click as he slowly approached me. I barely noticed as wet tears slowly made their way down my cheeks.

"Why are you doing this?!" I screamed desperately. Anything to halt the shadow's progression.

The only response was the continued faint clicking on the concrete.

"Please... stop... Please..." My voice was hoarse, and the screams slowly turned to whimpers.

Click. Click. Click.

He stood directly in front of me. And the tears came down faster now.

"...Please. I can't... Please..."

The grin got wider, and my chest heaved with sobs.

He slowly raised his hand, and in it I saw a large syringe. The needle thick and shiny.

He brought it higher and higher until it towered above my head.

"...Goodbye, Vaila."

In a swift motion he brought the syringe down and I saw it get closer and closer, the point hovering directly above my eye...

I lurched off the floor, adrenaline coursing through every inch of me. I looked around the dark room, panic set deep in my bones.

A dream? A nightmare. It was a nightmare. I tried to steady my breathing, trying to ground myself in reality.

But wasn't that the reality? The shadow man... the chair. It was all real. The nightmares never strayed far from reality. They were one and the same.

I clutched my knees to my chest.

Breathe. Just breathe. One moment to the next. Just survive.

Just....

Survive.
