SOMETIME EARLIER...
The sun fully sets as Rango trudges through the lonely desert. An exodus to nowhere. He knew the moment was coming, but he didn't expect it to go this bad. He lost everything, the respect and admiration, his friends, or technically his only friends, his roommate, Scarlett, everything, and all because he lied. Rango had been desperate to find an identity and figure out who he was. He spent much of his life trapped in that tiny habitat with nothing to do, no one to talk to. Granted, chameleons are notoriously hard to care for due to the fact that they typically don’t handle captivity well at all, and can actually die from stress because of this, so a few toys, a small puddle of water, and little to no greenery are not exactly going to help them. Then again, he didn't think his humans knew much about how to take care of pets or even love them, considering they never came back for him. Rango shouldn't blame them. He shouldn't blame anyone at all. He knew he was digging himself deeper in the hole with his lies, but he kept going, all for the sake of wanting a purpose. And now that it was gone, he didn't know what to do. While he continued walking down the desert. He didn't notice the mariachi owls as they looked at each other before they packed away their instruments. They lowered their heads, disappointed at the chameleon.
A car speeds by as its headlights momentarily illuminate the desert. Rango wanders to the highway. He stands still, completely lost. He sees his little windup fish, Mr. Tims, still on the side of the road where Rango left him. He picks up the toy fish and hugs it close to his chest. A few more cars speed by as Rango sees his headless doll torso, still there after the car accident. He goes over to it and sits down next to it. He puts the dolls arm around his shoulder for comfort, though it didn't work.
Rango: *In his head* Who am I?... I am nobody.
Another car drives past as the chameleon looks on in sadness. Rango stands up as the doll torso falls to the ground. He began walking across the highway as he became lost in his thoughts. It looked like he was hoping one of the cars would hit him as he took off his hat. He continued walking through the road as cars continued to speed by,barely missing him. He makes it to the other side of the road. And in a quick moment, he collapses on the ground, passing out as the world fades to black. Unaware of the small pill bugs carrying him away.
Rango woke up when the sunlight hit his eyes. He groans as he opens his eyes. He sits up as he puts his hat back on. He turns to his left and gasps. Right next to him was a white golf cart with all sorts of things stuffed into it, including four golden Oscar statuettes shining in the sun. Rango pauses, realizing that this sorta looked familiar
Rango: The Golden Guardians. The Alabaster Carriage.
Rango walks around the golf cart, too stunned to speak. If the Alabaster Carriage and the Golden Guardians were here, then that meant... Rango looks ahead and gasps. In front of him was the silhouette of a man. His back was facing him. Rango approaches him, realizing who it is.
Rango: The Spirit of the West.
The classically western dressed man is scanning the dry desert floor with a metal detector. The legend was true. The Spirit of the West does exist. Rango didn't believe it at first, but with all the proof that was presented to him, he sure believes now. Rango approaches the man hesitantly.
Rango: *Clears his throat* Excuse me? Mr. Spirit, Sir?
The Spirit of the West picks up an old fishing hook. His back was still facing the chameleon.
Spirit of the West: Ah. There's a beaut. *Pockets it* Sometimes you gotta dig deep to find what you're looking for. So you made it.
Rango: *Hesitantly* Is this heaven?
