Overcoming Fear ⟪M.R.⟫

You sit in Mattheo's dorm with his pet snake, you named Shadow, wrapped around your left arm. Mascara streaks stained your cheeks from crying over what happened in DADA.

Professor Lupin made everyone face a boggart to practice the reddikulus charm. You were dreading and trying desperately to think of anything but the one thing you feared most...poisonous snakes... but it didn't help.

Everyone laughed at you as you stood frozen in front of a massive sized Adder Snake. The exact same kind that bit you as a child and almost killed you. Without thinking, you ran out of the classroom and straight to the place you feel safest...Mattheo's dorm room.

His intoxicating scent engulfed your senses the moment you had walked in. The mix of cigarettes and his cologne calmed you down easily after a few minutes, allowing you to grab Shadow from her enclosure.

You were so thankful when you did research and found out this type of snake was not poisonous. It was the only reason you even attempted to hold her the first time. And it only took you holding her one time to fall in love with the jet-black snake.

"I thought you might be here." You hear Mattheo speak after he opened his door. He looked at your face before sighing. He sat next to you and saw that you were holding Shadow. He frowned and tilted his head, looking at you curiously. With your free hand you wiped your stained cheeks.

"Sorry, I know I look like a wreck." You say with a sniffle. 

"Not that, though you still look gorgeous. I'm just confused how you can hold Shadow when your biggest fear is snakes." He said placing his hand on your leg and rubbing his thumb across your knee. 

"I'm not scared of all snakes. Just the poisonous ones and especially Adder snakes." You say with a slight chuckle.

"Again, you're scared of Adder snakes, yet you have no problem with Shadow."

You froze at his words. Had you mistaken Shadow for a different snake? No, you couldn't. Shadow has always been calm and never once showed malice or intent to hurt you. You slowly looked from Mattheo to the snake that was wrapped around your hand and lower arm. You began to tremble when you realized the diamond pattern on Shadow seemed familiar. 

"Don't freak out Y/n." Mattheo calmly says trying to keep you calm as well. Shadow turned her head to your hand and nudged it in the loving way she always did. You're trembling slowly died down as a small smile appeared.

"All this time, I've been holding one of the most poisonous Adder snakes and yet she's never once tried to bite me. Maybe adders aren't so bad if you don't give them a reason to bite you."

"Even when you were trembling, she just showed you her love instead of biting you. Just goes to show you belong in Slytherin." Mattheo laughs softly.

"I forgot she only likes those she deems a true Slytherin." You say laughing with Mattheo.

Once you both stop laughing, you look down at Shadow with loving eyes. You mentally thank her for helping you overcome your fear. She nudges her head against your hand once more while flicking her tongue and giving you kisses.

Mattheo's door opens to show Lorenzo Berkshire, a friend of both of yours. He came closer before he steps back when he saw you holding Shadow.

"How the hell can you hold that thing when you're scared of snakes. Scratch that... how are you able to hold it period. That thing hates everyone." Lorenzo asks with wide eyes. You and Mattheo look at each other before laughing loudly at his words.

"I guess Lorenzo must not be a true Slytherin." You say while standing and putting Shadow in her enclosure.

"The hell does that mean. I was placed in Slytherin therefore I'm a true Slytherin." Lorenzo says defensively while crossing his arms over his chest.

"Not according to Shadow." You and Mattheo both say with a smile.

"Well Shadow doesn't know anything. She's a god damn snake after all." Lorenzo leaves the room while rolling his eyes.

You smile freely as you looked back at Shadow once again. She really was a beautiful snake and now knowing she's an adder makes you fear them less now. She'll be the one, along with Mattheo, to help you overcome your fear.
