Danila quickly and confidently walked out of the sitting room and approached the dining table where men were laughing and chatting. As he came up to Vladislav, he stopped in front of him and leaned over, talking quietly.
They both left the room and entered Vladislav's office while Mia took a seat in the sitting room, her hands at her mouth, thinking about her circumstances.
Why was this happening again, she thought. Danila made her feel the same way and again, Kirill was not here. But this time Danila looked like he knew exactly what he was doing. He wasn't acting, he wasn't pretending, he was doing and taking what he wanted.
She felt enormous guilt, like she betrayed Kirill and their entire union. At the same time, Kirill's words rang through her head: kill anyone who lays a finger on you...you have to do what's best for you to ensure your survival.
In Vladislav's office, Danila sat down in front of his desk while Vladislav remained standing, waiting to hear what Danila had to say.
"Why didn't you invite me tonight, Vladislav?" Danila asked candidly and Vladislav stayed emotionless. He had no obligation to explain anything to anyone. "I haven't proven my loyalty and brains in the last year?" Danila added.
"No, it's not that. I know what background you come from and...you're not the right man for her." Vladislav said coldly while taking his seat at his desk. He didn't really think that. He didn't invite Danila only because he felt like he needed to cut off the number of men at the dinner tonight. But now he wanted to hear what Danila had to say.
Danila smiled and lightly nodded as he stuck out his bottom lip. There was absolutely no way he was walking out of that house tonight without Vladislav's promise that she would be his.
"As all the 'correct' candidates sit there chatting you up and getting drunk, she's over there sticking her tongue down my throat." He smiled as he saw Vladislav raise his eyebrows in surprise. "I'd say, I'm the only man worth her time." He spoke lightly.
"Mia? Kissing you? Tonight? I highly doubt it. She's not that kind of girl." Vladislav tried to brush it off but was incredibly curious to hear what happened. They were gone for a while, he noticed that.
"Well, evidently, she is that kind of girl with me. I saw her two days ago and I introduced myself. Have any of them?" Danila pointed back into the dining room where rowdy laughter and conversations continued. "And today, here I am, making great progress, not getting drunk like anyone else you think might be better for her. She is lonely and depressed but she is also desperate enough to throw herself at me, the second time she saw me."
Danila ended the sentence and stood up. He walked to the middle of the room and turned around to face Vladislav. Danila was confident and spoke with passion and he meant business.
"You know my ambitions. The deal went through and now I control the biggest brand in the country. With her American background, we can re-market diamonds as the new hot thing to have. All girls deserve a diamond! In Russia too, just like in the West. Especially, homemade diamonds, from the heiress to the largest diamond mining company in Siberia. Her and me, together, are like gasoline and matches. We will burn all the competition."
Vladislav listened to Danila and ate it all up. What a smooth talker, Vladislav thought, but he was right.
"You and I are both from military backgrounds, Vladislav. We play the long game. She will vehemently refuse anything and everything for now but there is a spark in her eyes, I know, I can see it. And I'm not even talking about myself...It was love at first sight. I want to marry her. And I'm not leaving here tonight until she has a ring on her finger." And as Danila pronounced those words, he admitted to himself that it was true. He fell in love with her the moment he saw her at Yuri's funeral all those years ago.
