"No, he's not here. He decided to not be present for this conversation." Danila spoke seriously as the waiter brought over their drinks.
"How have you both not killed each other?" Mia dared ask the question. "Or, rather, how has he not killed you?"
"I really don't know." Danila replied, looking at his drink. "We somehow worked it out. But I know he wants to kill me for what I did. He's only tolerating me because he's afraid you won't ever give him the time of day if he takes me out. And his love for you is stronger than any anger he could possibly harbour for me. It's stronger than anything." Danila responded and looked up at her with a sad smile.
Mia merely nodded as she felt her insides shake at being alone with him and hear him say those words.
"Nothing will ever be the same between us, Mia." He suddenly shot his eyes up into hers and she listened to every word. "I hurt you irreparably. And you did the same to me. And we both have to just...walk away."
"You both really hurt me." She corrected him. "Why are you both here? You were on your knees this morning and now you are telling me the complete opposite. The games never end." She shook her head as his words pierced her heart.
"It was precisely as I stood on my knees and saw you look at him that I finally admitted it to myself. You and him are like black and white. Fire and water. Darkness and light. One cannot exist without the other. And you and me are like...matches and gun powder...explosive...and destructive. And even though I've never loved anyone as much as I still love you...seeing you again...I now genuinely believe, in my heart, and mind that, you and me would never ever work. Because some two things just...can't be mixed." Danila looked up at her with no smile or humour.
He really meant what he said. He was in pain when he was with her and when he was without her.
"I wish you realized all this before you tried to force us to be together. And got me pregnant. And made my husband break my heart, under threat of killing him. What the actual fuck were you thinking, Danila?! How could you do all that?!" Mia asked angry and in disbelief. She worked hard at letting it all go but now all those feelings were rushing back to her.
Danila felt incredible guilt but had no answer. He didn't know what he was thinking when he did all that.
"I don't know, Mia. I thought I...I thought I could just build what I wanted. I didn't think he would ever get out. I wanted you to be happy and I knew I could make you happy. Fuck..."
"You can't manipulate and control fate to your liking." She paused. "I'll be honest, I really wanted to kill you after I left." Mia watched his face contort in pain. "But I truly have moved on from all that. I just hope that you can find some sort of peace in your soul. I hope you can find someone who loves you the way I love him. You need to let me go." She finished not shying away from any of her words.
"I am. I'm letting go. Being away from you this past half year was painful but...not like before. This time it felt like it wasn't an open wound. Just a very deep scar. Although, I may regret saying all this next time I'm in bed with a girl and I can't fucking stand it." He finally smiled and put his face in his hands.
"Yes...that's what Bill feels like." Mia spoke and didn't know where to look. "It was all so good. We all fucked, we loved, we had a good time. And then it just all went downhill somewhere and it couldn't be stopped."
He had nothing to say. He was devastated to say all this but at the same time, it felt like he was releasing her and himself from invisible chains. He would never forget her and she would never forget him but, they could not do it. It was just not possible. This was a full stop. Not like before, no. This was an acknowledged, worked through end and he was ready, ready to let her go.
