I never once thought I'd get this call on a bright day in Miami. I sat on my bed staring out at the busy street, clutching the pillow like my life depended on it with tears rolling down my cheeks.
"She's gone Brit."
I cried louder, my boyfriend holding me closer and closer with each wholehearted scream, my mom was gone.They killed her.
"Mi tell r bout dah community deh inno, mi warn r and see dem bruck r shop and kill r." My aunt kept talking even though my heart was grieving, I lost my mom to gun violence.
I asked her to move to America with me but she insisted on staying in Jamaica, it was her home and who was I to take that from her? She couldn't leave aunt Soniya and she certainly couldn't leave her shop unattended.
Those things were her world and probably worth way more than life to her, figuratively and literally.
Zion didn't understand a word leaving our mouths but he understood my tears and my suffering.
Did everyone feel this kind of pain? Did everyone understand my struggle? or was I alone in this world now? No mother or father. Just me.
This made me cry more because I wished I hadn't listened to her sympathetic worries for the people she'd leave behind. I shouldn't have left her there. Now the reason I'd go home is to plan and attend her funeral, what did I do to deserve this?
"God why me? Why now?" I broke down, I lost my mind and sense of reasoning. After those words I heard nothing, the pale walls in my room became black and everything felt small. I was hyperventilating.
She was gone.
