BRITISH SMITH| 24

The sound of clapping echoed in my ears like morning bells. I stared behind Amanie trying to pinpoint where the noise was coming from.

Ever since I was young I made sure to stay vigilant especially in public places where you can hardly notice what's going on. It was something taught by my mom, she'd always tell me to keep my eyes open and thank God she did because the person I saw almost gave me a heart attack.

It was Hopeton.

He was the one I felt looking at me all this entire time, I knew something was off and that I had all rights to be uncomfortable.

"Couldn't invite yuh father to all the festivities?", he spoke.

Amanie looked up and I watched as his body language change, he was more serious than before and his hand rested on his hip where his gun was lying.

Hopeton observed Amanie very carefully with a displeased expression and sighed audibly, while I continued to observe the place. He never travelled alone whether he wanted to or not, based on research I had been doing with Damien.

"Nuh get nuh ideas." He warned, pushing me over and sitting next to me. His gun pressed on to my abdomen aggressively and I winced in pain, Amanie tried to remain calm but he couldn't hide the concern in his eyes.

Fathers weren't supposed to be a threat, they were supposed to be there for you and protect you.

Hopeton was a monster who has yet to actually tell me what he wanted from me, there had to be a reason he was following me around and making my life miserable.

"Wah yuh want?" I asked, trying to remind myself who had the upper hand at the moment, "Mi just wah talk to you, suh tell yuh likkle boyfriend fi excuse us."

Amanie wasn't going to leave whether I wanted him to or not and I was aware of that.

"Him naa guh no where suh talk now or leave."

There was a moment of silence, "Fine." He paused again. "Mi need yuh fi kill somebody fimi, short, simple and easy." All I could do was sigh at his request, I could never kill somebody. I didn't have the guts to and especially when they didn't do me any harm. "Yuh say yuh did just waa get fi know me. Yuh neva seh nothing about killing nobody." The gun pressed into my skin harder and all I could do was close my eyes and suffer the pain.

I couldn't see anything but what I could hear was a chuckle that told me enough about my 'father', he was enjoying the misery he put me in. This was fun for him.
